Important Truckers Forum Notice!

Biodiesel & Alternative Fuels Forum This is a forum to discuss bio-diesel and other kinds of alternative fuels. We think bio-diesel is the next revolution as Hydrogen costs too much to make and putting food (Ethanol) in your tank is not feasible and will cause food prices to skyrocket. What say you on bio-diesel? Should we start this bio-diesel revolution and kick it into high gear?

[LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. - New Paltz, N.Y., has long been known as a bastion of progressive thinking, living and being, man. So it's no surprise the town is headquarters for a company planning to produce the world's first air-powered automobile for the U.S. by 2010. The France-based Zero Pollution Motors says it's manufacturing 10,000 vehicles in its first year and expects to sell them for about $17,800. The cars will have 75 horsepower — that's a little less than the SmartForTwo — will seat six and will produce zero emissions.

"Electricity powers an onboard compressor to compress air to 4,500 pounds per square inch into a pressure tank contained in the vehicle," ZPM communications director Kevin Haydon told the Daily News from New Paltz. "This can be done in a garage overnight and it will take 1-2 hours. The compressed air is then used to power the engine."
Their car will travel

abou

http://agonist.org/ww/20080327/compressed_air_car_coming_with_2010_breezet 1,000 miles at up to 96 mph on one fill-up.

Here is a different car that does not go as far

Quote:
Negres’s compressed air car can travel 120 miles between refueling. That is significant because more than 50% of Americans live 20 miles or less from work, and the average daily mileage per car is less than 40 miles a day. The cost to operate is low, about one dollar per hundred miles. The compressed air only car will need to go to compressed air fueling stations for a compressed air refill. Once these retrofitted gas stations are in place, a refueling will take 3 minutes, will cost about $2 and will allow the driver to drive 125-175 before needing to refuel. Alternatively, there are engines being developed that either switch over to electric or gas power allowing the car to continue to be driven, while at the same time operating the compressor to refill the tank with compressed air. This model car could be driven from L.A. to New York on a single tank of gas. Because there is no heat generating combustion in the engine, changing the oil, vegetable oil at that, needs to be done only once every 30,000 miles.

What is not to like about this? Cars that are pollution free, basically petroleum free, low cost to purchase [estimates are less than $20,000], low cost to operate and capable of handling most of our driving needs. Sure if you want to pull a boat or rumble around in a big SUV or pick up this vehicle is not for you, but for commuting and running errands, the overwhelming amount of vehicular use in the U.S., the compressed air car is just fine.

Something clearly is going to have to change. This might be one of the answers because, like the article says, most driving is just around town, not hauling a boat. It is very interesting indeed.
I was reading about the Toyota Prius. Toyota is now claiming that the 2009 model will be capable of 100 mpg. Apparently there has been a breakthrough in battery technology. Heck, the little Honda Insight was able to get 63-70mpg but Honda quit production of it a couple years ago because they didnt sell enough of them.

Both the Insight and the prius are too dang small to do anything with. It was the same deal with the metro years ago. It is an appealing idea jsut not practical. The cars need to get bigger to get the broader acceptance they need. The air cars are being smart by rolling out a six seater up front.

Ok so how much air would it take to drive a 18 wheeler from coast to coast??? i don't think that they could make an air motor to run a big truck..It might work in a small car..Very small car...

They are looking at the statistics of the situation. An overwhelming amount of driving is done with only 1 or 2 people in the vehicle.
There can be analogy made between big cars and dinasours............

They need a design that runs on HOT air and BS. Dispatcher make hot air and BS so they would be a good power supply. But the only problem is the BS it would be spread everywhere!! Any Ideas????

That would make Washington DC a major fueling location.

I'm gonna be honest here... I'd be afraid to have it... compressed air can and does explode.... that could be somewhat inconvenient if you were in the car...
