Truckers' Trucking Forum/Message Board - The Premiere Truck Driver Forum

Biodiesel & Alternative Fuels Forum This is a forum to discuss bio-diesel and other kinds of alternative fuels. We think bio-diesel is the next revolution as Hydrogen costs too much to make and putting food (Ethanol) in your tank is not feasible and will cause food prices to skyrocket. What say you on bio-diesel? Should we start this bio-diesel revolution and kick it into high gear?

Should renewable energy include nuclear?

Should renewable energy include nuclear?

Quote:
Berlin – A new global effort that aims to make renewable energy more accessible to every country in the world will launch on July 1st.
Governments are lining up to join the first agency that will advise them on how to make a renewable energy transition. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has attracted 108 countries, including the United States and China, which are both expected to announce their membership this week, in a move that experts say could boost the agency's credibility, since both countries are leaders in renewable energy.

Nuclear Power Plant Hazard Issues

Did you know that during the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant emergency of Wednesday, 28 March through early April of 1979, government and TMI officials did not know for days the full extent of the risks to the public and that the government went into emergency production of Potassium Iodide (abbreviated "KI") solution to help protect the public?

Some of us may have been out on the road when this happened...

This clip is a collection of voices from press conferences, radio shows and interviews after the accident at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear power plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania, on March 28, 1979. This was the most serious accident occurring in a U.S. operating commercial nuclear power plant. The accident was caused by a combination of personnel error, design deficiencies, and component failures.

Nuclear power in a moving submarine, surrounded by high explosives is okay, but not okay on dry land?

Only in America.

Has the waste disposal problem been completely forgotten? As far as I can recall, there has been NO solution to the problem of a functionally radioactive waste that lasts 2000 years, and presently is contaminating land and sea as barrels that waste was stupidly put in rust away, amongst other problems.

Problem solved.

Nuclear Fusion Fission
Quote:
AUSTIN, Texas — Physicists at The University of Texas at Austin have designed a new system that, when fully developed, would use fusion to eliminate most of the transuranic waste produced by nuclear power plants.

The invention could help combat global warming by making nuclear power cleaner and thus a more viable replacement of carbon-heavy energy sources, such as coal.
Quote:
The scientists propose destroying the waste using a fusion-fission hybrid reactor, the centerpiece of which is a high power Compact Fusion Neutron Source (CFNS) made possible by a crucial invention.
The CFNS would provide abundant neutrons through fusion to a surrounding fission blanket that uses transuranic waste as nuclear fuel. The fusion-produced neutrons augment the fission reaction, imparting efficiency and stability to the waste incineration process.

At this point, all options must be considered. Nuclear power is far cleaner than other options, and less dangerous than ever before. The French (cough, choke hack) have developed a way to reprocess spent rods and yet the American government doesn't seem to be interested in the technology (IMO).

If they can make the waste safe...I say nuclear power is OK...

BUT, like everybody else...I don't wan't one in my back yard. They started building one a few miles from my house back in the 70's, it was about 70% complete when the 3 Mile Island incident happened. After that construction stopped, the reactor was removed...and the buildings were stripped.

Surgoinsville, TN is the location (Phipps Bend Industrial Park)..it is now an Industrial park and home to most of the better places to work in that area (I've worked at every one of them at one time or another)

Absolutely! Solar works only when the sun shines. Windpower works only when the wind blows. Electrical power is generated in real time - storage is mostly not an option yet as it is much too expensive to consider, although options are being worked on - so you have to generate power when it's needed. There has to be a base of electrical generation that is supplanted by solar and wind; for the most part in the US that's coal-fired plants - we need to stop building new capacity based on coal and move to nuclear. And there is no such thing as "clean coal."

Who ever said coal was clean?
