Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It

Greetings! I'm a native Texan who somehow landed in Georgia. The state of the economy is such that I've been forced into a career change. I'm not really sure where this road will take me. Why don't you stop by and find out where it has taken me so far?

  1. OnRoad Gets a Black Eye, and I Make 3000 Miles Anyway

Another uneventful week. A good thing if you ask me. Uneventful weeks yield higher mileage and little stress. The only issue I had was a broken windshield wiper in the middle of a Florida summer rainstorm. A call to Onroad was unhelpful as they declined to send me a truck for what they say as a minor issue. I disagree completely! Without your wipers in a rainstorm, you can't see! I had nothing available to temporarily reattach it until the next truck stop. Onroad suggested I just use a rag--that ...
  2. Never Using Lancaster Again

Short and sweet: Stay the #€££ away from the Dallas terminal unless it's an emergency. Everyone has an attitude, especially shop personnel, and especially especially shop management!!

I had three simple problems that they took a week and a day to fix and none of which required specially ordered parts or anything of the sort. It was an uphill battle the whole time. An entire week wasted at the shop!

My DM tried getting me a new truck but none were available at the terminal. ...
  3. Finally in the green!

This last week I saw a decent paycheck, my biggest yet. And I know I ran more miles this week than last, so next weeks' paycheck will be even bigger than last.

The end of las week ended with lots of paper runs. From Philadelphia to Kentucky then deadhead to Ohio to take a trailer bulldozed full of garbage paper to Dublin, GA.

They got me home on time. My load leaving home 2 days later was to go back to Dublin and get the recycled garbage paper now turned into newspaper ...
  4. Sick of the Short Bus and the Dogging Around

Wow. I knew it was bound to happen but I didn't realize it would be in my first few weeks. I already need a vacation!

I'm late again with this update, I know. Again, it's hard to find time when you're out here on your own. I've been too busy being Swift's local Sears #####. Yep, I said it. I've been given 4 loads this week all under 200 miles and all of them for Sears. All of them required I do the work of the yard dog at the shippers and receivers. I moved so many trailers....wasted ...
  5. Week 7/8/10 thru 7/13/10: De Ja Vu

by , 07.15.2010 at 05.47 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
I know I'm late with this update and I am sorry but it has been a bit crazy getting used to doing all this on your own. Time management crash course...

Well, my week started out at the terminal having just been given my own truck. They gave me a load I had to travel north to Blairsville, GA to get (left at 0930 and got there 1500). It was a live load of soda and extremely heavy--77,000 total weight at scale. Surprising to get such a heavy first load. But you get what you get when ...
  6. On Our Own

by , 07.08.2010 at 07.50 AM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Just me, myself, and I. Just us, on our own...

Seriously, the day I have been dreaming about has finally come. I am writing this blog entry on the comfy 2 inches of memory foam on top of my bunk in my own truck!

Made it home in time for the fourth with the family. Monday was a holiday for administration at Swift so I didn't have to be back until 8AM on Tuesday. It took two days to upgrade with all the classes and lag time. Officially moved into my truck yesterday. It's ...
  7. Rand McNally IntelliRoute TND 700 Review

by , 07.02.2010 at 07.55 AM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
I did a lot of research on the truck-specific GPS units out there. What I found before I purchased was that the TND 700 had so many more features than the other units and got excellent marks at Diesel Boss. Being one of the most expensive, if not THE most expensive, unit available, I had high hopes and expectations. I bit the bullet and paid a total of $550 after taxes for it.

Out of the box, it's a simple assembly process for the mount. The mount itself is the best I've seen. It ...
