Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It

Greetings! I'm a native Texan who somehow landed in Georgia. The state of the economy is such that I've been forced into a career change. I'm not really sure where this road will take me. Why don't you stop by and find out where it has taken me so far?

  1. Memphis Blues

Well, it's been an eventful four days since I last updated my blog. Last I left you with was that we were in Memphis, TN at the terminal getting our A/C fixed.

Guess what! We're back. We weren't able to get the A/C fixed afterall because they didn't have the part and it would be a two day wait for it to come in. So, we decided to sleep in the truck at the terminal with the windows down. It was hot.

The next morning, we tried but were unsuccessful in getting a load back ...
  2. Memphis! Where's the BBQ?

Yesterday was my first experience in delivering to a Grocer and using a lumper. This one happened to be Sav-A-Lot. Very well organized. We arrived at 9:00PM for our 1:00AM. There were 9 or more trucks lined up on the soft shoulder of the road that led up to the guard shack. Official word was that we would probably be delivering on time. The guard had us turn to channel 2 to listen for our turn. A few hours later, we were summoned in. We had to park and wait for the driver in our door to finish up. ...
  3. I Want to Go West, D@mn It!

Well, I think I have had enough of the east for now. I-95 and I-20 seems to be the predominate highways. I can't wait to get a load back through Texas, New Mexico, Nevada or Colorado. Those are places I haven't been to in a while or ever.

I also can't wait to get off my trainer's truck. Long story short, he's really starting to annoy me in several ways. For one, he never stops talking about...well, let's just say he won't stop talking about it. I'm about to have to have a serious ...

  4. Four Days In

by , 05.16.2010 at 04.39 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Well, I'm now on my fourth day in training. My trainer and I are getting along just fine. We have similar music preferences but that's about it. He is decent about explaining things when asked but not quite as proactive as I was hoping for. He's mostly in it for the free miles and conversation; not because he wants to share his knowlege. I knew a lot of trainers were in it for the money so I wasn't expecting much else.

Anyway, we left Tupelo for Garysburg, NC to deliver a load of ...
  5. Saying Good Bye For Now

by , 05.13.2010 at 08.54 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Gotcha nervous didn't I? LOL. Don't worry! I'm not leaving the forums just yet. (Some of you might be saying, "####!")

I am leaving Atlanta though. Yep. Leaving for now. I should be back in about 6 weeks. For now, I'm headed to Tupelo, MS and all points beyond with my trainer. Yep! I made it through orientation alive and well. Got "coded" and my trainer was here waiting on me.

For load security, please understand if I don't name the shippers and ...
  6. Getting Oriented

by , 05.12.2010 at 08.39 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Wow. What a boring two days so far. Mostly we've been waiting around for something to happen. When it does, it's usually a speaker from one department or another or getting our physical done or taking care of our paperwork. Being just two days out of three completed, tomorrow will be filled with more of the same. We will find out if we are hired around 5pm eastern tomorrow. That's when we will get our fuel cards and find out if our trainers are here or not. A private word with one of the HR reps ...

  7. It's Come, So I'm Leaving

by , 05.07.2010 at 06.33 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Okay. Only one and a half months later and I finally got my Texas CDL in the mail. Apparently, their printer broke so there was a backlog and I got caught in the middle of it.

Went to the Georgia DDS to get it switched over as per Swift's policy. Well, guess what. They don't print their licenses while you wait anymore, so I have to wait for it to come in the mail too. Or, so I thought...

The temporary one from Texas was just a stupid sheet of paper with black text that ...
