Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It

Greetings! I'm a native Texan who somehow landed in Georgia. The state of the economy is such that I've been forced into a career change. I'm not really sure where this road will take me. Why don't you stop by and find out where it has taken me so far?

  1. Days To Go, and a Fight to the Finish

I'm currently 1 of only 2 students in the truck I'm in now. All the others have graduated. The other student has been in the truck now 2 weeks longer than me.

My driving instructor today told me that we both will be testing this week, but whoever of the two of us drives the best over the course of the week will get to test first. If it's some sort of motivation to do well, it's working. Not that I needed any kind of motivation--the fact that I have no income right now and my bills ...

  2. The Recruiting Process To Date

by , 03.21.2010 at 04.00 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
To be honest, I never expected I'd be sitting here writing about the recruiting process with Swift. I had initinally wanted to go with Werner based on the fact that my brother used to work for them and based on my own research. But, things with Werner fell through due to a couple of reasons which aren't important. The point is that my second choice was Swift. My brother had nothing but bad things to say about them, but he was in the industry almost 10 years ago. I sure hope things have changed and ...
  3. International vs. Peterbilt: Pinto vs. Cadillac

by , 03.21.2010 at 03.00 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Since I started the driving portion in my school, I had been driving a well-used 2004 International 9400, 10 speed. The gears have been worn down so badly by new students that even the instructor grinds gears. After having driven it every day for 3 weeks, I've been promoted to a 2004 Peterbilt 387. I'd like to take a moment and compare the two...

The International reminds me of my first car. Used. Worn out. Somewhat neglected. Slow. But...I've gotten used to it and actually somewhat ...

  4. How I Got Free Training

by , 03.21.2010 at 02.00 PM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
Seriously, I was able to get my training for free. The only thing it cost me was a lot of time and effort, and the gas to get from my home in south Georgia to my parents' house back in Texas. I don't have to pay any student loans and I don't have any contracts with anyone. Here's how I did it...

Firstly, let me say that what I did was 100% legal, but it can never be done again, by anyone. But, it's a good story...

I was on the phone one day in January with my brother ...

  5. A Little History

by , 03.21.2010 at 11.00 AM (Swift Transportation: It's What You Make It)
    Hello everyone.

Please allow me a moment to regale you with a little history about me. I am 24 years old and have a 3 month old daughter at the time I write this. I am former Air Force. I have been dealt many curve balls in the last few years, which has led me to where I am now in the midst of an expected and unwanted career change. However, my daughter is the most important thing in my life, so no matter how much I'd rather be doing something else, I am determined to make the best ...
