the best advice I can think of for a rookie is this: GET OUT AND LOOK- no shame in being safe and double checking. StAY AT ONE PLACE 1 YEAR OR MORE, no matter how sucky they seem to be.
That's the big mistake I made in the beginning. My license wasn't in top notch shape so despite going to a top notch school (Fox Valley Tech Sch, Appleton WI 10 week CDL course) none of the big boys wanted to monkey with me. I ended up going the outlaw route and grew a chip on my shoulder.
