Everyone is undoubtedly wondering, contemplating, thinking, fretting about the economy. What is going to happen - will the bailout go through, will it work, is yet another huge waste of taxpayer's money? Many "experts" think the nation is going to go into at the very least a recession. Most believe a depression is en-route if the bailout doesn't go through.
Whatever the case, I have been talking to numerous drivers about the miles they are getting - I can't say that any of them had any complaint. We have O/O's coming into our yard frequently. Besides getting some pretty interesting characters, none of them were hurting for the miles. I thought that very odd considering what I have been reading. Maybe they have found a niche and just roll with it. I dunno. I have talked to numerous UPS freight drivers - yes it has affected things, but none of them have said their miles are down.
It's obvious everything isn't hunky dory out there- but there are companies that apparently are making it regardless. Whether that will continue or not remains to be seen.
I was thinking about taking on some weekend work. I would like to get some more cash in the bank account and not have to worry so much about my finances. My normal sources for that kind of thing are dried up. The biggest one - it's a company called Contracted Driver Services in Litchfield Park - west of Phoenix - has almost nothing in temporary work. Compared to 2 years ago where they were begging for drivers to haul loads from various companies. I would rather do a thing like that through a temp company - you are not under obligation to stay with any company they assign you to. You get tired of working 2 jobs and giving up your free time, you simply scale back or stop the second, temp work job altogether.
I have another place I can go, though. It's a company that hauls coca cola products from their warehouses to the coca cola - whatever they call it - in Tempe. I am not sure why they do it like that. You go into that place and there must literally be MILLIONS of cans and bottles of sodas stacked up in there. The comapny I am referring to - which I can't even remember it's name, I just know where it's located - has a hard time finding people to take the weekend shifts. X amount of product has to be delivered every day, and the Coke center is the determiner of that. They HAVE to haul until that amount has been delivered. It makes for a long Saturday - I was doing it a while back, 12 hour shifts anyway.
Well, I dunno, certainly don't have the answers. Only know that I have to take care of myself and my family - just like everyone else - and that the company I am working for is feeling the pain tremendously. They are still making a profit, though. Which is hard to fathom considering our biggest customers are in the construction business, which has tanked considerably in the last year.
I must end this little delight write, cause' - I have to go to bed. I'm just musing over the things that are going on today. Just like everyone else.
