Garbage Trucks in a Hurry

Posted 09.29.2008 at 05.10 PM by racerx22288
Yay, a new contract, that's all that the owner of Grand Canyon Hauling & Services and myself, being the only driver for this small company could think. Guaranteed work, alright! So we contracted with South Grand Canyon Sanitary District to haul "sludge" away from their two waste water treatment plants to the nearest landfill about 90 miles away, twice a week. What could go wrong?

First thing, this "organic bio-solid" that we get loaded up puts one of our trucks...

I didn't meet this A-Hole but I know he is an A-Hole.

I'm at J in Walton, KY, relaxing when I am jolted forward.
Damn! Somebody just backed into me.

I put my boots back on and went to the back of the trailer to see if everything's fine.
It is.

Except the behavior of the culprit. He didn't get out to check things out.
He just pulled away, toward the exit.
Never saw his truck and the trailer doors and sides were blank.

Uncertain Times

Posted 10.01.2008 at 10.55 PM by TrooperRat
Everyone is undoubtedly wondering, contemplating, thinking, fretting about the economy. What is going to happen - will the bailout go through, will it work, is yet another huge waste of taxpayer's money? Many "experts" think the nation is going to go into at the very least a recession. Most believe a depression is en-route if the bailout doesn't go through.

Whatever the case, I have been talking to numerous drivers about the miles they are getting - I can't say that any of them had any complaint. We have O/O's coming into our yard frequently. Besides getting some pretty interesting characters, none of them were hurting for the miles. I thought that very odd considering what I have been reading. Maybe they have found a niche and just roll with it. I dunno. I have talked to numerous UPS freight drivers - yes it has affected things, but none of them have said their miles are down.

It's obvious everything isn't hunky dory out there- but there are companies that apparently are making it regardless. Whether that will continue or not remains to be seen.

I was thinking about taking on some weekend work. I would like to get some more cash in the bank account and not have to worry so much about my finances. My normal sources for that kind of thing are dried up. The biggest one - it's a company called Contracted Driver Services in Litchfield Park - west of Phoenix - has almost nothing in temporary work. Compared to 2 years ago where they were begging for drivers to haul loads from various companies. I would rather do a thing like that through a temp company - you are not under obligation to stay with any company they assign you to. You get tired of working 2 jobs and giving up your free time, you simply scale back or stop the second, temp work job altogether.

I have another place I can go, though. It's a company that hauls coca cola products from their warehouses to the coca cola - whatever they call it - in Tempe. I am not sure why they do it like that. You go into that place and there must literally be MILLIONS of cans and bottles of sodas stacked up in there. The comapny I am referring to - which I can't even remember it's name, I just know where it's located - has a hard time finding people to take the weekend shifts. X amount of product has to be delivered every day, and the Coke center is the determiner of that. They HAVE to haul until that amount has been delivered. It makes for a long Saturday - I was doing it a while back, 12 hour shifts anyway.

Well, I dunno, certainly don't have the answers. Only know that I have to take care of myself and my family - just like everyone else - and that the company I am working for is feeling the pain tremendously. They are still making a profit, though. Which is hard to fathom considering our biggest customers are in the construction business, which has tanked considerably in the last year.

I must end this little delight write, cause' - I have to go to bed. I'm just musing over the things that are going on today. Just like everyone else.

G'nite!...

I ran down to Charleston WV last night - and then back home..

total run time was 10.7 hours...

The hitch was that I had to stop at a customer on the way down and drop of a trailer.

(your gonna love this one)

I left Cincy on time (18 minutes early actually) and arrived at the customer not having stopped for ANYTHING except red lights...

It was 10 minutes past 5pm....

A lady come running across the parking lot screaming...

Stuck Truck

Posted 10.20.2008 at 11.04 PM by TrooperRat
I should have known better. In these parts, newly started constructions always have an in and out area to access the site that is lined with river rock.
When it's first laid, it isn't compacted and trucks get stuck in that stuff because the drives just sink into it.
So it was today. I was trying to pull into one of those things so I could turn around off a street that dead-ended after just having had made a delivery there.
Freakin' truck sank like busted boat in water.
What made the situation worse was the phone call I had just recieved - I had to high-tail it downtown to pick up a fusion machine to turn around and high-tail it another 60 miles to the site -which was shut down because of the thing this fusion machine was going to fix.
I'm frantically kicking out the rocks behind the drives and attempting to clear it so it can back out of the mess.
I gave up after 10 minutes and highly-winded from the rock-kicking waste of time - if I had had a shovel I probably could have cleared a backwards path out of it.
I decided, instead, to go drag the nearest backhoe/operater and have him pull it out.
Yes, it pulled it out, but that backhoe struggled for at least 30 seconds with it before the tractor finally broke free of the rocks.
I've been driving for 25 years and I still do dumb things at times........................
