happy 4th of july! (I gotta work)
Kansas city I will be a going...
(600 miles out - hotel and then 600 miles home tomorrow)
As normal for me I like to spend some time on the 4th - thinking about what the USA is to me and my family.
Unlike a lot of immigrant families , we did not come here to escape a hardship or persecution - we came here by choice and have kept our ties and business interest overseas.
In many ways the standard of living is better in Switzerland than in the USA. But there is a charm to this country - a charm and a sense of adventure... an unknown element that lured my parents here - and a charm that has kept my sister and I here.
I served this country in a military fashion as I served my birth land (mandatory for all Swiss born citizens).
On the 4th of July I like to remember and daydream about my time as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. I served after College and broke my commission after a reduction in force (1996). the Reduction (RIF) kinda took me by surprise - but it was for the best - my duties were getting stale - and in my heart I knew that I did not want to make a life as a Marine.
Time well spent though - and time honored.
So this July 4th I will be driving to KC...
I will be eyeballing all of the farmland and towns that have never had an invading footprint on them - as well as eyeballing (harshly) the foreign drivers who do not understand their role here in the USA.
I have a problem with the Russian / Slovak drivers who are not only rude - but are not willing to learn the language here - and who were not only my enemy a few years ago - but now do not even put any effort into being an ally here on "our" soil.
My manta for July 4th -
"Do not disrespect the USA by speaking today if you can not speak the Language!"
