Thought I'd share my experiences as I start a new career at 52. By this age, most people would be thinking of retirement and not starting over. I'll try to keep you informed how it goes.

Sample of a month of driving

Posted 04.11.2009 at 05.26 AM by ParkRanger
OK, now that I've been driving I'll let you know a little more if you're interested. 3 weeks ago I started by picking up a load of glass in NC going to NB (Canada). Took 2 days to get there and then sent to NY to pick up another load of glass going to MI. From there I picked up a "live load" of glass going to PA. Up to the "live load" this was a lot of driving, which is great, but the "live load" took me about 5 hours to secure. It was less than 400 miles to deliver....

Too much to do and blog - Final Blog?

Posted 01.30.2009 at 04.47 AM by ParkRanger
Well now they're keeping me busy. I went home with an empty flatbed, got sent to Ft Bragg, carried 3 vehicles to IN, (after a slight snow delay), was immediatly sent to MI to pick up a load going to MS. The experience of loading and tarping all this stuff is interesting. I know some folks complain about tarping but how tough can it be to lift a 70 pound tarp filled with ice and attaching it to a flatbed? Ok, it took me a couple of hours. But then I have a 12 hour ride to deliver it. I have too long...

First solo trip over

Posted 01.07.2009 at 04.19 PM by ParkRanger
Well I guess we all remember our first time. My first delivery went fine. Someone wanted to know things you gotta have on the truck. Water or soda or coffee. All the electonic gizmos like gps or cb or cell are nice, but you could live without them. I like to read so books are a must. For flat bedding I like coveralls and gloves. It cuts down on laundry. I do have an iPhone and gotta say I love it. It has gps weather email (I'm doing this on the phone in the yard with no wifi), or and it's a phone....

I'm in my truck, under a load

Posted 01.01.2009 at 06.41 PM by ParkRanger
Got my truck 12/30, got a load 12/31 and drove it home. It doesn't deliver until the 6th, so I'm sittiing around the house for a few days. That's a little slow for freight, but at least it's a start. It was a little spooky driving a truck by myself the first time. But, now I can listen to what I want, drive when I want, stop when I want, and eat when I want. OK, we'll see how that goes .

Truck assignment

Posted 12.19.2008 at 02.22 PM by ParkRanger
Well, a little suprise that I now have a truck assigned to me already. Went to the yard today to finish up paperwork and got a truck assignment. I go home till December 29th (I'm looking forward to that) while the truck gets cleaned and some repairs made (previous driver had removed part of the bumper, which is perhaps why he's a previous driver). It's one of the Maroon automatics, so watch for me out there after the first of the year.

Done with Training

Posted 12.18.2008 at 06.24 PM by ParkRanger
Today my trainer has turned me over. We had a great time and ran about 6000 miles in the last 2+ weeks. Bad news is that my wallet disappeared around Gary, IN, but that's another story. Good news is that I got to experience loading, unloading, tarping, untarping, weather (about 8 hours to get through Chicago), border crossings (2 each way, 1 was a little interesting), and lots of other stuff. In such a short period of time it was a great time and I'll always have a great amount of respect for...

First week OTR

Posted 12.06.2008 at 04.11 PM by ParkRanger
WOW!! We started out Sunday from Laurinburg, NC, drove to Lakeland, FL and made a delivery, drove to Leesburg, FL, picked up a load, which we delivered to Columbia, SC, then deadheaded back to Laurinburg. Next day picked up a load to Concord (next to Toronto), Ontario. Dropped it off and deadheaded back to Laurinburg. That was about 3000 miles for the week!! Had a lot of fun and learned a lot about driving a loaded trailer up and down mountains as well as driving the same trailer empty across the...
