Thought I'd share my experiences as I start a new career at 52. By this age, most people would be thinking of retirement and not starting over. I'll try to keep you informed how it goes.

School's Out!

Posted 10.24.2008 at 04.46 PM by ParkRanger
Well, we had graduation this morning and it was very emotional. Out a class that started with 31, we graduated 20. We had 8 who had A's (which is a lot more than any other class). I'm hoping to here for a company on Monday about a job, but will be in a cabin in the mountains for a few days to destress. Thanks for all of your support.

Last week of school is here!!!!

Posted 10.18.2008 at 06.43 AM by ParkRanger
Well, it's finally here. This week I got to solo a few trucks (no instructor, with another student), passed my backing test (only 1 point out of 150 possible), and actually feel comfortable driving a semi. Next week we have to pass our forward driving course (should be easy), coupling, and a written final. Technically I have a low enough score that I should pass if I flunk everything, but I doubt if that will happen. My wife is doing much better and I have a couple of things to wrap up, but...

Week 6 and it was good!

Posted 10.10.2008 at 06.29 PM by ParkRanger
Finally, I qualified on both trucks and also on the CDL Skills test this week! That means that next week all I have to do is qualify on the CDL driving test to get my CDL. I understand that according to the skills I had to show to get qualified on 2 trucks in school, the CDL skills test isn't a problem. There isn't anyone in our class that has tried their CDL test that hasn't passed it yet.

I also am happy to report that my lovely wife seems to be doing well. She had a little setback...

Week 5 over

Posted 10.04.2008 at 06.20 AM by ParkRanger
It's been a tough week, mentally. While most of my classmates are getting qualified, I'm having trouble getting it done. I think I'm a little intimidated by the big trucks when I get into traffic. But my shifting skills seem to be a lot better when I'm paying attention. I messed up and stalled the truck when I forgot to put the range selector down. Dumb mistake! My backing skills are improving and I just need to relax a little on the road tests and get them behind me. To pass along a little advice...

Week 4 done, Half way there!

We began qualifying on the road this week and did our CDL PreTrip test. I have discovered that I get a lot more tense when being tested on our skills than I had thought that I would. I missed several points on my pretrip (although I did pass), and my road trips I missed a few gears. For our school, we must be OKed by two of our instructors before we can do a CDL skills and road certification. We have to qualify both on a 9 and 10 speed on a 9 mile course through the city and a little stretch of...

3rd Week done, 5 to go!

Posted 09.20.2008 at 03.50 PM by ParkRanger
Things are starting to smoth out, even my double clutching . I got to drive a Super 10 this week, and enjoyed it. I know understand (Note I didn't say know) how to drive a 9, 10, and Super 10. I've been in a Freightliner and a Volvo (liked the view from the Volvo much better). Drove through some big roads, and through a city during lunch time rush hour on little streets . It's all been very educational! I had a little trouble backing up straight, and this week...

2 weeks down, 6 to go!

Posted 09.14.2008 at 07.51 AM by ParkRanger
It was a tough week. Everything went well, but the hours seemed to be long. Friday I was just burned out. I got home, talked to the wife a little, ate a little, and went to bed about 8:30. I'm doing some photography work on weekends and had a shoot Saturday, got home took a nap. I'm about useless around the house so thanks to my lovely spouse, everything gets done. Some of the other students are working or don't have the support that I do, so I don't know how they do it. Maverick has been asking...
