Insurance Question I was hoping y'all could help me with

Posted 10.06.2008 at 04.06 PM by Researcher68
Hi,

I am looking up for a customer how much insuring an owner-operator truck would cost per month. Since I am not the owner-operator, and since it is rather hard to look up quotes without the name and address of the driver, I was hoping that one of you guys could respond to me regarding the following questions.
- I know how trucks can get a different quote regarding size, type, driver history, whether it is lease-on or not, etc., but how much, on average, would insurance cost for an owner-operator for a large truck used for deliveries? (Like an International 4900 or the like).
- What does one do if you are curious to join the trucking industry as an owner-operator, and want information but cannot get a quote?

How do you guys get around this?

Not much Help I know..........But...

I went through this Very same problem, When I was trying to get information regarding getting my trucking venture going.

I never found a good way to get this type of information prioir to actually having a solid plan.
(ie; Knowing what truck and trailer I was going to actually have, and what type of hauling I would be doing.)

What I can say is, IF you or your friend will be Leasing on with a company, They usually will offer the insurance through their Fleet.
(which usually will be considerably less than if you were getting it on your own.)
And the Company you are considering Leasing on with will have a pretty good idea of the insurance costs prior to actually leasing on with them.

If you are planning on getting your own authority, and finding your own loads....
Then I cannot be of much help, other than, when I looked into it (through a company over the web)
The prices ranged from 399.00 - 999.00 depending upon partial services, or Full service.
That was the initial costs....
I do not know what the maintenance costs were, as I did not pursue it further.

Eventually I plan on running on my own authority,,,, but for now...I wait.

I hope this helps a little.
Good Luck to you and your friend.

where to look for your own authority.....

There are many places to look online..

Just google Trucking Authority.

but like I said, if you just google Truck authority.... it should pull up some options.
It will atleast give you a starting point.

BTW I cant recommend any of them.

I never looked much further than initial costs for getting my own authority.

So I can not recommend any of them to you.

But if you or your friend are planning on leasing on with a company...
I do recommend taking advantage of their Fleet discount, and atleast checking out the possible savings of using their insurance.

This is better answered at the Forums

I think you will do better on finding your answers at the Forums.

The Blog section is more like personal diaries (as WiseOne put it.)

here is a link to a thread regarding insurance.

But I would recommend looking under the "Ask an Owner/Operator" section.

Good Luck!!

for a very small fee I suggest you join OOIDA they are very helpful in getting insurance helping you keep your truck should you mange winding up getting your truck into a company that tries to take your truck away with liens because you go in the hole with them for repairs they offer so much, husband joined for $25 a yr. you get accesss to so much and they know more about the trucking companys and the industry and can answer alot. I personally have met several drivers they have kept from losing their trucks to companys that they signed on to. They swear by OOIDA. Check into them.
