Propane - another short story

Posted 09.05.2008 at 12.39 PM by TrooperRat
I was standing in a yard (trucking yard) one day in El Paso, doing what I can't remember. Something, I'm sure of it! Trains passed by this yard quite frequently. There was a giant propane plant across the street - there were hundreds of thousands of gallons of the stuff being stored and shipped out of there.
A propane tanker truck comes out of the yard, up onto the tracks and stalls. And - if you haven't already guessed - a freight train was coming, honking it's horns for all they were worth.
For some reason, this driver couldn't get that truck started.
The train was getting closer. I didn't figure to start running for my life - too close. If that train plowed into that tanker, likely it would blow up and than that giant plant might go with it - I would be a goner.

So I just stood there watching this train getting closer and closer to the tanker truck, whose driver is obviously attempting to get the thing started and off the tracks.
Long story short - that train wasn't 300 feet from that tanker before that guy got it started and off the tracks.

I dunno - just one of those things that sticks out in memory, even if nothing actually happened.
