Probabbly more seasonal work in summer .Most mountain work needs 2 years experience. We can drive 13 hours in a 24 hr period , check the hours of service thread. We also have the National saftey council rating system similar to the new 2010 regs. If you havn't winter driven you don't want to run the mountains (BC) green , I've chained in May on a main highway. And our highways are mostly 2 lane. there is prolly more work here for now. Alaska regs are somewhat different than the lower 48 ,don't know details on that. A lot less van frieght .

Things are pretty slow for the north freight right now TDJ. Rates are too low as well. We got hit pretty hard with the crap that's going on down south. If you don't have at least two years experience & over 25, it's doubtful anyone would even look at your application right now. Experienced, 10 years+, drivers are having a tough time. There's always the "mills", ie TransX, etc that are looking for drivers, BUT, BEWARE of those types! And, as stated above, our roads, especially in the mountains & the far north are cow trails compared to your highways. Once you get off the four-lanes...which would be 4 hours of a 36 hour trip to Alaska, you are on narrow two lane highways. And once you get a couple of hours into northern BC, winter can & does get pretty brutal ... be prepared for -50 temps, a foot of snow on the highway, and there's no such thing as a truck stop or rest area either... I ran the far north for 30 years... some of that road is no place for an inexperienced driver to be.

HOS for the far north & Alaska are very different even from Canadian standard HOS. South of 60 rules are basically 13 hours of driving allowed... duty cycles are two 70 hours in 7 days, similar to US rules... or 120 in 14 days. North of 60 are 15 hours of driving allowed, no duty cycle in other words 105 hours of driving/week allowed... that is just like Alberta ONLY rules...with the exception that it's 13 hours of driving.

As far as logging goes...ever driven up the side of a mountain on a bush trail that's 9 ft wide & a 15% grade, & coming back down with a 100,000 lb load of logs pushing you down the mountain? If not, don't even think about logging up here.

My advice, get a few years under your belt first...

If you want... do a search for me & check my Arctic pictures... it will give you a pretty good idea what the roads are like.

Unless I'm mistaken, our very own Wildkat had a brief segment during season 2 of Ice Road Truckers.

NO WAY... that was some ding-a-ling who worked for Carlisle... couldn't drive her way out of a wet paper bag that one, I had a couple of run-ins with her on the Alaska highway...sheesh... well you know what a "super-trucker" is right? That was her...in spades. Think they finally run her off after she had a couple of wrecks.

LMAO CC, If I remember it, they got my truck coming onto or going off of the Mackenzie River when they were filming the very beginning of the show...bout 20 seconds worth I think!

LOL What a JOKE that show was...absolutely NOTHING like reality!
