I am also hoping alot of people post here. I'm just starting out and from what I've been reading on the boards on this site finding a first rate company to start with is very important to a good career. I'm also hoping to find companies that are based in the Oshawa area as that's close to home. So far about the only two I've found are Canada Cartage and TTR transport.

There is/was VA and Maritime Ontario over by the airport, on 7 if I remember right, right around the Toyota dealer? That isn't far from Oshawa. I'm trying to remember where the Fred Thompson terminal is. Isn't that close to MO? Maybe just off Queen and Chrysler, on Corporate, I think?:biggrin_255:

You know guys, that except for real small outfits you are just not going to get the horror stories that you read about in the USA. Our labour laws are just too strict for companies to get away with the crap that goes on Stateside. I also have an observation to make, that Canadians just would not tolerate the kind of treatment that seems so common south of the border. We work for Challenger out of Cambridge On and there is nothing bad that I could say about them. You have to work hard to make a good buck but they do their part and the drivers do theirs. Equipment is good, safety is job one and the miles are good. I have spoken to drivers from most of the big Canadian carriers and it seems that those type of conditions pretty much pervail in the industry in this country. If anyone is looking for a job check out Challenger. I do not think you will be disappointed.

I looked at Challenger myself before I went with Schneider. Without knowing more than I do, they seemed decent enough.
I did not know that the Ca. laws were stricter, and that is
    not necessarily a bad thing.:biggrin_25525:

To the original poster, SNI has a yard in Aberfoyle, chock full of Canadian drivers. While having something right next door would be nice, sometimes you may have to drive a bit to get to your truck. Crap, I drive over 200 miles one way to get to mine.

Maritime has relocated to Brampton it seems. And VA has a listing in Bolton. I had heard from another driver that Thompson has/had a location out this way but the only one I've been able to find is in Mississauga or Toronto.

Ya, you may have to drive a bit. What's Mississauga from you, about 80km? That's not real far. Oh, and SNI has some sort of yard around the east end of Toronto, and still west of Oshawa, right off the 401, I want to say Brock Road. It's a dedicated yard, can't remember for who though. I can't even recall the name of the town there, not far from the scales. Whitby, yea, that's it!:biggrin_2559:

I know of the SNI yard out this way. I think they are for more regional and local haul and you need experience before you can get anything there. It does appear that I may have to drive a bit to get to where I need to go. My neighbor has a friend who works for Challenger and apparently speaks highly of them.

I talked to them just before I came to SNI, and was seriously considering them, but SNI made an offer I couldn't refuse, so here I am.

To all, How about Laidlaw, Trailwood, MacKinnon?
I know I'm only naming them, hoping someone will come up with info.

This could be a VERY useful thread!!!:biggrin_255::biggrin_255:

Speaking of Challanger...did the union ever get in? I've heard some stories a while ago about teamsters getting into Challanger but i never heard anything afterwards...

Mac Kinnon is supposed to be a decent outfit from what i hear

So far from what i hear by a good number of drivers in this area:

The BLM group is by far the worst outfit to run for...the owner is a control freak and a psychopath...the poor people in the office are having mental breakdowns while he's throwing coke induced tantrums and the drivers get treated like crap...

I have heard some very positive things about the Conestoga Cold Storage in Kitchener...they treat their drivers really well, but then again technically speaking they are not really a trucking company (maybe thats why)

Celadon is supposed to be pretty good as well....
