Hi im currently a uk hgv driver and just wondered if anybody could give me any information about working in canada as a driver. I have seen on a few websites that there is only long haul work for foreigners but is there any companies out there that would consider foreigners for short haul? Any information would be great

    Hi Stoney,

From what I understand from the large British population at the company we're leased to is that Canada is only granting work permits/permanent residence to long haul drivers because this is the work that Canadians aren't grabbing.
The current requirements require the person under the LMO to be out of province a certain minimum number of days per month and have this amount of time recorded under their name with the government agency for two years or until such a time permanent residence is granted after two years to remain in Canada.
Out of province can be quite a distance, for example, Alberta to the NWT border is 10 hours, Alberta to BC border is 6 hours then from BC to Yukon Territory is another 14hours.
The places taking LMO applicants that I know of in Edmonton, Alberta run the foreign workers hard to meet this, expect never to be denied and some pay only a percentage of a Canadian wage because this is permitted. They also enjoy a percentage of the cost of the foreign worker program returned as a credit or in funds from the Canadian government. The large companies are very happy with this arrangement and this does little to raise the pay for Canadians (so many leave the industry). For us personally, we see that during slow periods we remain at home so the foreign workers can meet their extra-provincial requirements.

Not all companies will treat LMO workers fairly or even well, but Canada is a great place to live. If you are willing to go through two years of unpleasant conditions and servitude the end goal will be citizenship and a career of your choosing.

    I hope this helps you.

HGV - That's 'heavy goods vehicle' is it not ? It's been a long time since I held a steering wheel (I was Army) in Europe so some terminology is slipping ......
