I agree, most qualified heavy mechanics in the patch make 70-120 thousand a year. And work is far easier to get and not seasonal.

Yep-that's the way I see it. I would much rather drive than turn wrenches, but when I sold out I kept one of my service trucks JUST IN CASE- a good HD mechanic can ALWAYS find work!

Not sure what you mean by to low. Run those same hours in a truck and you are at about 55 to 60g. I doubt buy these rumors of drivers making 70 to 90g a year. Yes you make good cash for oct to March but then you are done for a bit. I still have yet to have a diet provide me aT4 that shoes anywhere near 90g. Face it a ticketed HD wrench is way more valuable to a company and they are paid better. The average wage for aNEW journeyman stats around 40 an hour. ... and that's to be in a node comfy warm shop with the latest greatest tools AND home every night. Had out on the road in a service truck and it goes up.

Well Prairie Boy I ain't got a hell of a lot of exp driving but I sent you a resume regardless, who know maybe you need an old welder with a new class 1.

Wildduece has it right, tradesmen make more than driving, I left Fort Mac in 06 and wages then for a qualified journeyman were 35-40$ an hour. More if you got on with the big boys ie: Syncrude, Suncore, Albian. After 30+ years of welding I got tired of beating on metal. Spent a few years working on my property(well heh heh a lot of time just looking at it as well) and decided I needed something to do so I went and got my class 1. Here's hoping I didn't waste my money.

Not to mention that they're crazy hot in the summer, stupid cold in the winter, nasty, muddy, greasy and dirty no matter what the season, and they have to buy, transport, safeguard and maintain their own $125,000 set of tools.

Last year I made 60k swamping.

This will be my first year driving, will see what it brings.

My buddy made 135k last year hauling gravel crushers around and doing a bit of rig moving. But he was never home.

its way too low for a mechanic in alberta/northern bc....to be fair to your point im talking camp job, thats what im familiar with, ya all the mechanics here get peanuts if they work near home and be home every night, thats the deal, we get paid to be away

i drive truck (tri drive quad wagon) and did $98k last yr 20days on 10 off, i worked 16 extra days above my schedule. ill make more this yr same job and theres better $$ out there, im just real comfortable here so ill stick with my poverty wages
