I work as a truck driver since 2 years in Germany. I drove 1 year long cooler and now I drive since 1 year Flammable liquid.

I would now like to emigrate with my family to Canada (for example Vancouver, BC).

It is also possible that I come alone and a few months later my family will join.

Can you give me tips or contacts of companies in helping emigrates.

    Looking forward for information.

    greeting

    Thorben from Hamburg

Vancouver is beautiful but a bit on the pricey side. And its not just rent/property its all the other things like bridge tolls, carbon taxes, insurance, business or provincial personal taxes, HST. The real killer and deal breaker for me was the traffic, they say its only second to Los angeles in all of North America - the news paper ran a story about that. Better find a job nearby, and make sure your not travelling in the wrong direction at the wrong time. As a rule of thumb its hard to drive into Vancouver in the morning and out at night. Expect to spend a lot of time in traffic and to be nickled and dimed a bit. However, the guys doing fuel in Vancouver get paid similar to what you make in Northern Alberta. ei: some guys make 32 an hour - check out Wheeler transport (on the flip there are a lot of very lousy jobs too). There wont be much discrimination in Vancouver, there is a very large immigrant population and they seem to get along very good.

The place is breathtakingly beautiful, can't understate that. In the winter it rains alot, 16 hours of darkness to 8 hours of clouds. In the summer its opposite, 16-18 daylight sun, 6-8 hours dark. It might snow a couple times a year, hardly ever last more than a couple days. Any direction you drivie in from Vancouver is stunning. But be prepare to deal with the Coquihalla mountain. And man, I can not state enough how beautiful it is there! I could introduce you to someone who has a lot of work on the ferries and in the mountains so you can see the full scope of it. If you have any more questions let me know.

    Hi,

thank you for your information. We had looked at regions where the weather is like in Germany and where the job offer is good.

I have lived 5 years in america, so my english language is not so bad. :biggrin_255:

If you have other areas where it might be easier in the beginning, then I'm always grateful for tips.

    Thanks a lot

There is a fairly robust filming industry in Vancouver. I know guys who work as truck drivers in the unions and their wages would make oilfield guys cry. That might be a goal to work towards.

BA blacktop is a German owned company with huge plants/operations in Vancouver. If you go to their website you'll find their parent company you may be able to try that. Those guys make in the neighborhood of 35 of an hour doing labor, driving machinery.

I'm being more of a smart@## than anything else, :) but the paper lied to you, or the writer has never been to Toronto. Having extensive knowledge of both Vancouver and LA, I would take either one over the GTA hands down for trying to get around. Consider that 20% of Canada's population lives in the GTA, and probably north of 30% are new to the country/culture and haven't got clue one how to drive properly, (thanks a ton TrueDOUGH!) with one lousy expressway to get from point A to point B (discounting that high-dollar abomination known as the 407ETR) and you have a receipe for disaster. Which of late seems to be played out daily.

LA on the other hand with over 20 million people in the So-Cal basin has enough expressways in any given direction that you can usually get around okay. And if you don't have a CB or traffic radio, just keep you eye on the sky. When you see seven or eight helicopters hovering in the air, get off that road in a rush. :) And although you can get jammed up anywhere, I usually am able to find another way from A to B in the lower mainland. And to th OP, all the best in your search, and bring beer!

Currently I have no work visa. As a German citizen I can apply this from Germany or upon arrival in canada.

I do not know what's going faster in Germany or at point of entry? :biggrin_25521:

But to get a work permit I need a working offer.
