I know this is a loaded question, but I spent a lot of time in British Columbia, Yukon and some time in Alberta. I have Verizon right now, but I pay out the nose for service in Canada and the coverage sucks big time. I need a data plan to be able to check email and use my e fax for all the border crossing paperwork that comes with the job. Verizon wants $25.00 for 1MB for data and around $30.00 for call and text.
I would be fine with a pay as you go plan or if I could find a provider that works in the US I would dump Verizon all together.
Here is a link in case anybody is wondering what I do: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...g-forum/241742-running-produce-to-alaska.html

I have the same problem but the reverse. Had a Canadian phone but spend more time in US and was getting killed for the roaming/data. Got a verizon unlimited data (no longer available) + Canada minutes. They probably still have something like that, but if the coverage is spotty at best for the roads you travel you may be better to get a second phone just for while in Canada ... I have an internet card that I use when in Canada from Telus for data while here and the phone takes care of all US data ...

Here are some of my findings after talking to Sprint and AT&T yesterday. Sprint was honest and said they would not be the best choice for Canada and Alaska. I recommend the sales person for being honest. AT&T's customer service was awesome as well at the local store. They spent over an hour with me and did tons of research. Looks like they have the best coverage in Alaska and use Rogers network in Canada. The Rogers coverage looks pretty decent in BC and the Yukon. There are several dead spots, but that is t be expected due to the remoteness. AT&Ts suggestion was also to buy a phone that is unlocked and get a Canadian pay as you go plan where I could bring my own device and then switch SIM cards.
I will need to find out which carrier Verizon uses for Canada and I probably have to get a better phone since I use an older LG phone that might not get the full coverage area. If I could get Verizon to work alright in Canada for calls and texting then I could get a USB stick for data in Canada.
I want to thank everybody for their input so far and still look forward for more helpful posts. -
I have Telus, and I am happy with it. Their coverage kicks butt in the out of the way places. Rogers typically sticks to the major routes, but they are expanding.
I have Telus SharePlus 55 plan with 10gb of data for another $85/month.
My bills usually run at almost $300/month. Way more if I roam in the USA. That's why I have verizon mifi and skype for south of the border.
