    Hey guys.

I haven't finished training yet but my instructor likes me and loves the way I shift. He's setting me up to go northern Alta. hauling logs. He says and so does the guy I'd be working with, that it'll be great experience and training although it won't pay well at first. They logging guy says if I can haul logs out, that after I can do that, anybody'll hire me on. Summer time they don't earn that well, but winter time they do.

Camp job, supply own food, may not earn at all for the first couple of weeks.....or very little.

What say you experienced hands out there?

    Thank you.

Sounds like they wanna take advantage of your inexperience. Don't give your time away.

Sounds like a terrible deal... I wouldn't turn a wheel if I didn't know if I was going to get paid... Keep looking in my opinion.

Ok. I'm not sure yet on the first couple of weeks with these guys. I need to ask more questions on the next phone call and ask for some specifics. It was just vague about the first couple of weeks. I think the guy I talked to was not the guy making the decision..... but he stressed the importance of getting a foot in the door. I understand. After 2 sessions in the truck, I have 5 left to go including the road test. Then I'll have a licence. I have a new perspective now about the value of that licence. - Next to nothing. I'd be grateful if someone took me on and let me continue to learn on their trucks.

I have worked for free in the past to get experience. That did enable me to get a really good job down the road because I had some experience and they liked my attitude.

These guys are getting paid by weight/load. Can you guys tell me what I should expect to earn as new driver?? Thank you.

    Could you

Getting your foot in the door.... Red flag for me. Your going to take a bit of a hit starting out, but most good companies will get you up to speed quick. Some red flags came up for me in your post. How are you going to pay for food if your not making much?

It sounds so fishy.... No one in there right mind would reccomend a brand new driver with 7 lessons to hit the logging rds. I'd hope you'd have a mentor for awhile Atleast! One good thing though is that it would be summer when your starting.

Hauling logs just as dangerous in the summer. I'd sooner do it in the winter. Not a chance I would risk being a trainer for a new guy hauling logs... Pucker factor would be unbearable.

Nate 980: I'd be with a mentor for the first 2 weeks. The mentor figures that after that, I'd be ok to go on my own.

up north guy: I have enough money to get me through a "break in period" but not a long one.

I'm not trying to be pig headed, just trying to answer questions. I can see that you guys don't like it, so I am listening.

    I'll get more information.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Ask if the job is working for a company where you will have "an employee employer relationship" OR will you be working as a subcontractor through a broker (owner operator) or an employment agency.

I would think anyone going into Alberta would be paid better than drivers from most other regions in Canada.

Ask them for "a ball park figure" on what you can expect to earn.
Experience is important but you still have to earn a livable wage.

He was pretty straight. He said that during the summer and fall, earnings were less than great. he said 3-4000 clear. Which is certainly less than great. He said winters were better at 8-10,000 (not sure if that is clear) ....he was unclear about the first two weeks (didn't seem to be his decision, but I would be with him in his truck....so it sounds like he's helping me in, but I won't be earning anything for anybody during the first two weeks of mentoring. Hence the lack of clarity about money for the first two weeks.

IDK. I'll try to get more info. I do understand why it's hard to get in as a newcomer. So, you got a licence....big deal.
