Have you considered buying your own truck? I got my license in 2006 and bought a new truck right away. My dog was 90 lbs and a number of companies either didn't allow dogs in company trucks or had a 45 lb maximum. I've NEVER regretted becoming an owner operator, I always get to make my own decisions about what lanes to run and what routes to take and as a single female in a truck this is a big plus for me. If I want to take some extra time to hike with the dog or if I want to run a different route for safety or convenience it's my own decision. Running as a team you won't have any trouble making truck payments. Do consider it!

Just out of curiousity what do you mean by an internship? In trucking? Things must have changed since I got my license 8 yrs ago! Thanks and best of luck to you!

    toshady Thanks this.

If they're like me, I can't even afford a toy truck to put on my dresser at home, let alone a real big rig!!

As Macneil said... as a student right now, I'm eating a lot of plain noodles and hotdogs, and can barely afford gas in my car. Thanks for the advice though, owner/operator is something I'm interested in doing once I can get some cash in.

I can't imagine going with a 100lb dog! Props to you, haha! Mine is a 45-50 pound Shepherd mix/mutt type.

The internship I mentioned is actually more like a paid work term. My school helps place me in a company for a 300 hour term, then the company can either hire me on, or I move on to some other company. I'm still in the in-class stuff, but I can't wait to get in a truck!

Even with a job trucking. Get used to the noodles and hot dogs.

Hey, I hear ya about the size of the dog. My current dog is 65 lbs and all legs so he can jump in and out without my help! Best of luck to you, I'll be hoping to hear who you sign on with and how life on the road with bf and dog are going! Grrl truckers rock!

ah I wish my dog was tall! He's like a stunted German Shepherd, people tell me he looks like a Corgi... so poor guy will need a lift, but he doesn't mind. I've got a few companies I'm looking to contact shortly, any long-haul suggestions would be helpful. Thanks DucatiGrrl, I'm happy to join the very small percentage of women in trucking!

As for the food... I could probably live off poptarts and chef boyardee. I'm a bit worried though about becoming really overweight/unhealthy from all the sitting and road food. How do you guys handle this?
