I'm looking at the CBSA site and it says US citizens only need their birth certificate and photo ID (DL). My company just asked me if I could get a passport, so I'd appreciate hearing the current requirements, including what criminal convictions would disqualify someone.

You don't need a passport to enter Canada, you do need it to get back into the US.

if you live in a border state your state can put in on your cdl...... otherwise a passport is REQUIRED it get back into the U.S.

All adults arriving by land from Canada or Mexico must have a passport.

No you do not need a passport to get back into the USA, it however makes it a whole lot easier, without a passport you will submit to an interview until immigration can decide you are a US Citizen.
