Just curious; I've been running local with a few trucks for quite a few years, paying guys either hourly or daily.... now I'm looking at a flatbed deal where I'll get a percentage of the gross, so I'm wondering roughly what percentage should be allocated for a driver. And no, I am not sub-contracting my staff; they are tax-deducted employees. TIA

Depends on the value you're getting I guess. Dunno. I was a bedder/decker/over size/ hauler once. In car haul, a brokers driver 'usually' gets 30% of the load. JMHO.

Thanks guys...I'm sure once I'm up and running I'll have a better idea; I just wanted to know roughly where to start. I've been guilty of over=paying for the regional average before, so I don't want to do that again, lol. I'm seeing 80% for my percentage of the invoice, would be more if I get a trailer. I certainly want to have an attractive package for my guys; not one for bottom feeders.

For flat deck in Southern Ontario I was getting 24-25%. A little extra for OD loads.

If you get $5 a mile, you still gonna pay that 25%?? What if you only get 1.70/mile, you still gonna only pay that 25%?? Need more info here...

Yes. We also added pay for training, breakdown, lay-over, etc. If a driver is working for a descent company and doesn't lose their mind over any one load, then the averages should work out just fine.

Well, that's the end of that deal. I won't get into the pitfalls of the o/o options there, but the structure for company drivers pretty much killed the deal. 20 an hour, daily work close to max hours (good luck with commuting) and no overtime till 60 hours as per Federal designation. To me, that is very much a bottom feeder tactic; if you work a local job, it should be paid under the provincial guidelines, not hiding under a Federal loophole. And what's with these flatbed companies that think you need some spectacular amount of flat bed experience to be considered for a job that pays very average? All is not lost; just got on with a place with full benefits, much better pay per hour, local, and overtime paid at 42 hours. There is hope yet!
