why oil hauling is going to the crapper

All the old school patch truckers are taken.. Taken care of by good well paying companies. They are not looking in want ads, they are not asking other drivers how there pay is. They are fully content with there place that they fly so low under the radar doing what they do best that the only people that really notice them is their employer.

Good post...there are second career people (myself) making the change out of the diminutive corporate world into trucking and oil patch. We're definitely not shy of working the hours because we've had 20+ year careers doing just that. We have the maturity, stability and reliability to do just what you're looking for. Everything I do, I learn how to do it right and I learn it quickly.

We look more for the challenge and adventure in our second career and don't tend to job hop for the extra .50 across the street.

We only need to be brought out and given the opportunity. Our lack of direct experience cannot be compared to the lack of experience and responsibility of a twenty something year old.

 

I'm guessing a good number of them come from out east. I've worked with them before but never again. They come west hoping to make the big bucks for doing nothing. Had one working for a previous employer who couldn't get into the patch and all he did was complain about the wages as he seemed to be under the impression that everyone should be paying what the oilfield paid. The complaining was a good part of why he wasn't getting raises.

 

Define 'east' - Is that from everything from Yorkton east ?

So, you don't like 'easterners', you don't like 'foreigners', you probably don't like people from BC either, because they're all Indian or Chinese .......... have I missed anyone ?

 

Cheap employers like you deserve low tier rate drivers. Biting the hand that feeds you and still complaining. Look at yourself first

 

By East, I mean Ontario. As far as immigrants are concerned, I'm pretty tolerant. However, with the crap I've seen Indian drivers pull, it's very hard not to hate them.

Unions in the oilfield will fix this.

It will keep out the drivers who aren't serious about driving up there.
If drivers know they have to pay their dues and with that comes waiting in line for better jobs and better pay. It will also help reduce turnover. Drivers won't leave good paying secure jobs as fast as they are willing to now.

The "free for all" mentality that has permiated this industry is finding its way to the oilpatch. Ultimately that means there will be rate cutting companies that say "you have no experience" or worse..."sorry, that's what the going rate is".

Lower wages are inevitable.
