Quote from article:
"Why can't all but the last few miles be driverless even if a skilled driver is needed some step of the way for safety reasons?"

Dont we already have this with the railroad?
What happens when the computer malfunctions? -
They cant even get the auto breaking right as it is road grim messes up the sensors loose debris knock one out. They catch ghosts or shadows and apply breaks sometimes way to hard.
Talk about a securment failure with roads that have more patchs than actual pavment straps chains jar loose straps break without drivers it would be a nightmare. And its scary enough as it is. -
Don't airplanes pretty well fly themselves but we continue to have a pilot, sometimes multiple pilots on long flights? Would the public want to get on an airplane with nobody at the "wheel"? I think the same will go for trucks. Also, there are a myriad of other issues with driverless trucks, the biggest in my mind is who gets to hold the blame when the technology screws up? If a truck is suddenly on an icy stretch, realizes it is not going to stop in time for the slow car in front, and has to choose the best option may be to drive itself into the ditch, how will it determine that?
I am not too worried about trucking jobs going away any time soon. -
I am still waiting for a chance to buy my flying car. Popular Science had one on the cover back in 1949, but I can't seem to find any dealers....
