    Hello All,

My company is sending me to AK with a truck in 3 weeks. This will be my 4th trip there from the lower 48. Most of the trucks I see in the northern regions of North America all have aux forward facing lights on them. Are these lights illegal to have on your truck? If you can have them on your truck are they illegal to use while driving at night? I heard that one type of light was banned in YT by name. Also if I have them on the truck do I have to have them covered while driving? Just don't want to buy some and put them on the truck just to get a ticket for them.

    Thanks

Everything you wanted to know, go here: http://www.pacesetterproducts.ca/literature. Click on "Compliant High Performance Forward Lighting" and it will open up a PDF.

In summary, for on-highway use you are allowed two additional "fog" lights and two additional "driving" lights (assuming your vehicle does not already have any factory or dealer installed auxiliary lights). The fog lights may be used alone or only come on with your low beams and the driving lights may only come on with your high beams. The lights must be DOT/Transport Canada approved for on-highway use. If they are not marked, or marked "off-highway use only" they must be covered up or not facing forward when on the highway regardless of the fact they may be turned off.

That's the gist of the rules.

Now, what a lot of drivers have are off-highway lights that they use off-highway and/or on remote sections of northern highways. Just be smart and you shouldn't have any issues. Make sure any additional lights over the number allowed and/or any lights mounted in locations other than those approved by DOT and/or "off-highway" lights are covered during the day and/or when crossing a scale.
