Tax time is coming up and I just want to get an idea what some of you guys are able to claim to make sure I'm not missing out on any extra forms I can fill out.
Right now I live in New Brunswick(I'll be filing my taxes here) but fly back and forth where I work for an owner-op fluid hauling crude/water around Vermilion, AB. Our truck company is based in SK but 98% of the time the truck is in AB.
For meals I plan on only claiming the simplified version which is $17 a meal for a max of 3 meals a day for as many days your away from your "home base". Which i think I should be able to claim since my truck is based in SK. I dont think i need to claim showers/lodging or detailed receipts for meals since I stay at a house supplied by the owner-op. Does anyone claim this way and how do you go about proving that I work away if i need to?
I should be able to claim my cell phone as well.
I work percentage so would that make any differences anywhere?
Does anyone that ever did a fly in fly out know if they can claim their airplane tickets?
Also curious if theres anything else i may be able to claim that I havent thought of.
Would be awesome if anyone had any info on what they do for their taxes.

I just claim the simplified version of meals. The proof will be the locations on your log book and home terminal.
I have been told you can claim your cell phone as it is needed for work (dispatch).kfzr2 Thanks this. -

I would recommend talking to an accountant or get one come tax time. The money it costs you is worth it in the end for the money you get back!kfzr2 Thanks this. -
Showers and lodging are only claimable if your employer doesn't pay for them. Your boss supplies a home to live in, so you can't claim those.
Cell phone bills should only be claimable if you use them for running a business. You're an employee, so I'd say you can't claim them.
Percentage or per mile income is declared the same way. Your employer should issue a T4 slip for your income and deductions.
If you have to pay for your flying in and out and your employer does not reimburse you for them, you should be able to claim them.kfzr2 Thanks this. -
I concur with LugNut. Get an accountant. I've used certified accounts for years, both as a broker ( that's a business expense too ), and as a company driver. There is a TON of stuff you can deduct off the road. Find an accountant that specializes in trucking. Their websites usually indicate their specialties. Mine specializes in trucking, farming, and fishing. That's all they do. AND they're plenty good at it. WELL worth the money. JMHO.

I have claimed my cell phone when working in well service. There is a "T number" form that me and payroll dept had to fill out to have it claimed.
