I dont have first hand knowledge of the rate but I have heard that some were doing it for 1100 dollars for a round trip.
Ontario Owner-Operators today, is it worth it?

It's an apples and oranges argument. The higher than average money that's being payed to drivers in the patch is real and people are making it. I don't think it is fair to argue that prairieboy is misrepresenting the facts by basing your points and comparisons around the trucking industry's overall averages for income. The patch and general trucking are two entirely different things and it's pointless to compare the incomes of the two, they are at totally opposite ends of the pay structure to each other.
2girls1truck if you wanted to try out the patch you would see that the money is there and it is very good, it is not however anything like general freight and if you come and try it out (I highly recommend it) then you will see why the high $ is paid.Last edited by a moderator: Apr 12, 2015
misterG, itsneversafe, Prairie Boy and 2 others Thank this. -
There is many reasons pay is better. Oil companies pay very good rates and expect above exceptional service. Contractors want to hire the best drivers they can get then pay accordingly. On top of giving exceptional service drivers have to put up with an excessive amount of BS. Ball busting consultants, ball breaking supervisors, ##### kissers, Newfie ##### kissers (there is a difference) safety regulations which comes hand in hand with ball breaking safety officers. Then you factor in driving conditions. ####### roads, even $hittier drivers. It's dog eat dog in the oil patch everyone looks out for themself. And everyone is looking to step on your nuts to try get ahead. When oil prices slump everyone's on pins and needles wondering if their gonna have a job tomorrow. If you can put up with all this then you'll have a chance. It's not an easy gig which in turn brings up the wage. That's how I see it if anyone else has a rosier picture please share.
kw9's rock Thanks this. -
I would like to second the fact, that this argument is pointless, as the patch work is a complete different gig, than over the road trucking.
On the other hand, I completely understand how someone, whom has never heard of the patch trucking would be thinking that the wages are "too good to be true"....considering the thread topic is about owner operators in Ontario, it is easy to see, how there could be a misunderstanding followed by some hard opinions.
On the side note....just because this lady made a wrong assumption, does not mean that she is a moron.
She's also not the one, who started with personal insults..
Just because those insults had the form of indirect implications, does not make them any lesser than regular "in your face" kind of insults..
This lady's posts are well written, rational and intelligent considering, that she was missing a big piece of the puzzle...
I'm pretty sure, that most of you guys would react in the same way, if you found yourself in the same situation and someone has very casually told you something, that was conflicting with your personal to date experience in a rather spectacular way..
The truth is, that to your average over the road driver, whom has been conditioned into accepting certain wages as "normal", this will sound absolutely insane....I'm sure you can all understand this.
And we all know a thing or two about things, which sound too good to be true...don't we?
Actually, healthy scepticism should be a natural reaction of most intelligent people, when they come across such "stunning" information.
Instead of filling the blanks and explaining the differences in a non insulting manner, some of you chose to do the opposite...
I'm guessing, that it must feel very good for some people, to be able to belittle someone else for daring to dispute certain information, which sounded too good to be true and which I'm sure they themselves were all born knowing about.
Not cool.... -
She kept coming across like we are just a bunch of hicks out this way and being from the eastern part of the country with a majority population and we don't know what we're talking about as such wages have never that high etc etc etc and she's seen ads posted in the west and that's it.
One thing about her she doesn't need to Google anything, she knows it all. -
I think if you go back and read the thread, her tone was condescending and combative from her first reply. She just got back what she was serving. End of story.
