If you are burnin $1.20 a mile in fuel in a normal highway operation pulling a van or reefer, then you definately should not be doing this kinda work. PB, not everybody hauls what you do to be spending that kinda $$ on fuel. I personally know guys who haul tandem reefers who have their fuel cost down to .46/mile. I drive at 57-58 mph normally running Calgary to Regina n return n I am getting 7.2 US on winter fuel, 90 day average. With my cardlock pricing, my fuel cost is down to .52 cpm. I could operate on 1.50/mile if I had to, but I choose not to since there is so much better paying freight out there. My runs to Regina twice a week are paying me 3.63/mile all miles...

Well thats alotta fuel burn idling. For the business minded O/O out there like myself, an Espar engine and bunk heater are imperative, and return on investment is approx 4 months, thats if you pay someone to install it for you. I did mine myself after buying the combo ($1750) and my return on investment was under 2 months. My current idle time over the last 90 days is under 3%, so that way I can have somewhat of an advantage over the rest who dont see it that way.

Hey all,
It seems like it should be a standard, but..
Did you check out this breakdown from this site? This is USD, but at least you can put in some of your own figures and figure out what you need to have to cover your expenses and don't go broke working your butt off.

LOL...so my fuel cost according to that link is 39% eh?? Thats really odd since my fuel cost is .52 cpm, but my gross revenue is 3.63. That surely doesnt add up to 39%. Anybody who uses that link as gospel will very quickly go outa business. It is meant as a very loose guideline only. Its funny how they dont even include tires in maintenance and still wanna say its 10%????

OP, it might be wiser (and faster) to ask some brokers in the freight brokers forum about rates, lanes, etc. I belong to a few groups online (not load boards, as I don't have my own authority) and I take great interest in learning the art of negotiating and finding freight for when/if I make the leap.
Make sure you specify what you mean by East and West. My company hauls boatloads (literally) of freight from/to Newfoundland and West could mean everything from Winnipeg to Victoria.
I know you'll want to make your money going into Alberta, because the rates leaving are just sad. I watched a broker post a load from Calgary - Winnipeg, approx 800 mi for $380, less than $.50/mile and he had someone take it for $350 just to get out of that market. -
Wow!! Whoever took that load is a moron!! I just did one, reefer load from Cgy to Wpg, not even frozen for $1800...strait shot, no extra BS. I can get those loads anytime I want, but Im workin on an even sweeter deal now just running between Cgy n Regina.
