I am still in the early stages of going through for my az under the gov funded second career program. I became a bit concerned about my ability to pass the medical, after one of the local schools had provided me with a copy. When I went to the other big school in my area to get a feel for it, i brought the subject up with the woman who works in reception. To my surprise her advice was, and I quote. ' Just tell your family doctor to lie about that'.... WTF!!! After giving it more thought i realized she was only concerned with filling seats in the course and didnt give two #^%$ about whether or not I was actually able to get my license. I was at my doctors office the other day for a different matter and mentioned it in passing. The look on their face was priceless.

There was no question in my mind that they would not be the school I would be choosing.

20 years ago a friend of mine got banged up on the job so he took a job at a CDL school. I parked there one day and had a coffee with him in the office. During the coffee break, the phone rang probably 5 or 6 times. Each time it rang, the owner would smile at the receptionist and say out load ...... ' there's another $4000 bucks !! '

The rest of our coffee's were spent at the truck stop.

    Hi Kendt -

I'm about to do the same thing as you (laid off, second career, AZ) -- just curious where you're located?

I live in Mississauga and so far have checked out CHET on Cawthra Rd and I'm also going to look at Humber. The guy I spoke to at CHET said the Gov't will require me to go to 3 schools for the second career program (for a quote).

I just got my ROE, so I'm doing that today. I have my physical scheduled for tomorrow morning.

If you don't live in the GTA, the school stuff won't mean anything to you, but any insight you've had so far would be great!

    Thanks,

    Sheldo

I am in peterborough. yes There is a bit of home work involved, most of it seems pretty pointless to me but this is the gov. we,re dealing with so no big surprise. Have you met with a worker from the local 2nd career office? ..Mine told me to expect about 2-3 wks to get the app. approved if there are no issues. Its not really for a quote that they make you go to three. Its to make sure you are actually choosing the school for a reason. They will ask for the pros and cons of each. The cost and why you decided to go with the place you decide on. What I have found is that any school you contact will obviously want you to spend the money there so they will paint the best picture possible. So you can pretty much ignore anything they say and make your choice based on the actual amount of training you get. There should be a TTTC somewhere near you. Make sure you check them out.I chose them (aside from the comment the other school made about medical) because the course offers a bit of dump truck, plus three pieces of heavy equipment. None of those are a huge thing but just helps to make you that much more employable. And when I compared the hrs of training they still do more in truck hours than the other school. They also offer unlimited hrs on the simulator which cant hurt.Personally i would avoid smaller fly by night schools. The only reason you should be looking at them is lower tuition but since the gov pays up to 10,000.00 for tuition you may as well get the most out of it. Do the schools you researched have recruiting sessions? If they dont i'd be curious why.

Yes that is the one. The school in my city has been great.I also have noticed that whenever i,m out I see their trucks out and about with students. I dont see the trucks from the other school nearly as often.Just makes me wonder why.
