Hello to all my friends in the great white north!

I have a couple questions and hope to finally set the record straight on a couple of topics :biggrin_25520:.

First off, what is the max wheelbase allowable in Canada? I continue to hear random numbers. Some have told me that it's 228". Others, 245". Still some will swear to 265" Can someone please set the record straight?

Also, I recently heard that it is required to have a tractor governed at 65mph (110kph, I think?) or less. Can someone confirm or deny this? Thanks, again!

    Second question first. ;)

Ontario and Quebec are the only provinces that have speed limiter laws. Trucks are required to have a "hard" limiter (cannot be adjusted by driver) set to a maximum of 105 kilometres per hour (65.25 mph).

Officially, the maximum legal wheelbase for tandem-drive tractors for TAC-compliant vehicles (comply with vehicles standards set by the Transportation Association of Canada and outlined in the Commercial Transport Regulations) is 6.2 metres (244 inches). This can be exceeded in most (all?) jurisdictions by permit. For example, in BC you can permit a longer wheelbase tractor (to accommodate Americans running up to Alaska) so long as you don't exceed the maximum length (23 m / 75.5 ft), but it negates any other permit so no over length, over width, over weight, etc.

BC SPECIALIZED VEHICLE SIZE AND WEIGHT GUIDELINES AND PERMITS

5.3.7.A. Long Wheelbase Truck Tractors Exceeding 6.2 m
    Restrictions:

Non-TAC combinations (e.g. container trailers with added axles such as jeeps and
boosters, two vehicle combinations including logging truck/pole trailer or long
wheelbase truck tractors) are restricted to 23 m overall length.

    http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/cvse/ctpm/chapter_5.pdf pages 5-22, 5-23

Some jurisdictions may allow long wheelbase tractors without a permit so long as you don't exceed the maximum length. There has also been some discussion in various jurisdictions regarding changing this regulation, but I admit I am not entirely up-to-speed on this as it has been a non-issue as none of my trucks ever exceeded 6.2 m. It is best to check with each provincial authority as applicable.

And the first time you roll by a scale in Ontario, they will likely throw the 'puter on you to make sure you have the governor set where it is supposed to be. Although I still see plenty of trucks doing 110 and beyond.

I've been to Ontario several times since coming on with Landstar. Though I've been through several scales and stopped by one OPP officer, I've never had my tractor checked for a governor.

I believe it is $250 in ON and $350 in QC.

Most highway trucks up here are 244" or less. No matter the tractor wheelbase, your max length cannot typically exceed 75 feet. Ontario and Quebec are the only provinces with a speed limiter law on the books, and it must be set to 105 km/h or lower (65mph). In those two provinces, it's not that big a deal, since the speed limit is 62 mph (100 km/h), but to those of us who live in provinces with higher speed limits (like 110 km/h in New Brunswick) it seems pretty stupid. I don't drive that fast anyway, but it seems dumb that just because I run in Ontario and Quebec, I can't drive the legal speed limit in my home province, or the prairie provinces without having my speed limiter reprogrammed.
