As I continue my research into this profession and this school I've spoken to a number of local companies about their hiring process and opinions and experience with MTI graduates.

One employs mostly MTI grads but doesn't hire them directly out of the program, they've all done a few years somewhere else first.

Another describes their feelings as "hopefully optimistic" . They have hired grads in the past but have had poor retention due to the grads not fully understanding the demands of the job before getting into it. This would be more a reflection of the student not doing adequate research before enrollment. The did not, however seem to have any problems with the training itself.

A third company stated 'off the record' they'd had very poor experience with MTI grads and that they did not hire them at their location (BC) but referred them to one of their bases out in the prairies to gain a few years experience first.

the thing they ALL said was to "Talk to MTI grads"

So I'm wondering if there are any MTI alumnus out there who would be willing to chime in? How was your job finding experience after graduation? What about long term?

It seems that despite the claims of mountain driving training and such, most companies in BC still want to see a few years on the road before they will consider you. If this is the case, then perhaps it would be better to save money and consider Valley Driving School or TRU?

I've asked MTI to put me in contact with some of their past students but have only received the run-around...

Can anybody out there offer some enlightenment?

Well I never went threw MTI but I did go to valley for my driving lessons which I thought they were great. I passed second try with no problems and only failed the first time for doing something dumb which was an auto fail while coupling back up. That was my fault though. Doesn't chambers or arrow hire out of that program If I remember right?

Hi nate980, thanks for the reply,

Did you do the 'complete' 84 hour course or did you do the 160 hour 'career training program'?

There is a considerable difference in price:

    $3653 32 hrs on road
    $7650 60 hrs on road
    $9800 80 hrs on road

These are all way less expensive than MTI's cost of $14 804. So I guess I'm trying to ascertain how much the extra road time will increase my employability. If I spend the extra $$ on MTI and still have to go out o the prairies to cut my teeth for two years then it doesn't really seem worth it...

MTI has a whole list of companies they 'mentor' with, though they seem to have varying degrees of success...

If I remember correctly I think I was around 60 hours on the road, but when I did it over 4 years ago it was way cheaper lol. Plus I did a bunch of courses too like tdg which is useless, load securement (I learned how to throw straps over blocks) and an hour of service course which I would recommend. Honestly I learnt more when I was out on my own than I did in driving school. They basically teach the basics right and they get you to pass the course. Driving honestly isn't that hard, just don't over think it when you do get behind the wheel.

    artavox Thanks this.

Great post artavox. I've been looking at MTI myself and wondering if the extra money is worth it. Was really hoping for more responses.
