Electronic logbooks touted for truckers

Electronic logbooks touted for truckers

Alberta's roads will be safer as soon as truckers can electronically file logs showing how long they've been on the road, Alberta's only independent MLA said yesterday.
Dan Backs asked the government yesterday to fast-track the adoption of modern electronic filing technology to ensure those records are reviewed more quickly, giving authorities a quicker chance to respond to problem drivers.
"Everyone wants safe highways but many truckers are so fatigued they create danger and should not be on our highways," said Backs, the MLA for Edmonton Manning. "People in the transportation industry have told me the old-style time-consuming paper logbooks for truckers and bus drivers have little effect. Electronic means are now available for real-time, verifiable reporting of hours worked." Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Luke Ouellette told the legislature yesterday the province is working hard to get multiple jurisdictions to accept the new technology as a standard. "Alberta is not alone in its attempt to accept such technologies," he said, noting the feds and the U.S. government are also studying the log devices.
