Canadian researcher says speed limiters on cars are next

Canadian researcher says speed limiters on cars are next

A researcher from Canada says that if speed limiters become mandatory on heavy trucks, the mandate could someday carry over to passenger vehicles.
Quote:
“The population, in general, may be supportive of the idea of imposing this restriction on the speeds of trucks, but I think the people who drive cars and light trucks should recognize that, if this kind of legislation goes through for trucks, the pressure is going to mount to have the same sort of governors be put on cars and light trucks as well, Barry E. Prentice, director of the University of Manitoba Transport Institute and associate professor of agricultural and food sciences, told “Land Line Now” on XM Satellite Radio.

“After all, why do we have speedometers that go up to 120 or 140 miles an hour when there’s no road that allows you to go that speed?” Prentice asks. “Most of the accidents on our roads that are caused by speeding are actually caused by cars and light trucks and not big tractor trailers. So, I think one of the issues I see coming forward is that we may well find that trucks are the narrow edge of the wedge and after you get governors on trucks, we’ll see them on cars too.”
The top transportation official in the province of Quebec, Julie Boulet, introduced legislation Nov. 14 that included a proposal for mandatory speed limiters on all heavy trucks doing business in the province.

Exactly my point. But it'll never happen. Never. Govern a car??? No way the big wigs with lots of money would ever stand for that one!!

I still think speed limits should be 70 for trucks and 55 for cars!!!!

I fully support a speed limiter on cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One thing you can count on is that the "big wigs" will have a loop hole to prevent their car from only doing 55 or where ever the limit is.

NJ Governor Jon Corzine will have a problem with this. Evidently, he's not too fond of the seatbelt laws, either. According to reports of the accident in which he was involved back in April, his caravan was traveling about 90 mph and The Gov was not buckled him.

Hmmm... I wonder if he ever paid his $46 seatbelt violation fine...

Speed Limiters

I found the Canadian DOT regulation for speed limiters at [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link.

I frequently travel the high accident area that the rule seems to be the solution, which is what we call the Golden Horseshoe (Buffalo NY-Toronto Ont.) Seldom in that 120 mile stretch can I achieve the posted speed limit. The cars are able to exceed 70 mph for a couple of miles between traffic jams.

To me the solution is simple. Have manufacturers make all vehicles( private and commercial) with 75 mph speed limiters. Emergency vehicles need not be equipped with them. Put better quality education in the driving schools for stricter graduating requirements. Set a stricter education criteria and monitoring of commercial driving schools and crack down on the ethnic driving schools which seem to put drivers on the road with minimum training of skills.

I blame 50% our transport fatality problems on the technology industry and the other 50% on the transport educational sector. Lets stop wasting money trying to fabricate solutions and spend it at the root of the problem.

Keep up the good work Cybergal. Where do you find all this stuff?
