Log haulers threaten Prince George city streets

Log haulers threaten Prince George city streets, association says

2/19/08
CBC British Columbia, Canada
Quote:
A northern B.C. trucking group warns that log haulers are threatening the safety of city streets in Prince George as winter logging hits its peak.
The Prince George Truckers Association, representing 300 truckers, said a bridge closure and the creation of dikes near a riverside road due to this winter's ice jam have pushed logging trucks onto narrow neighbourhood streets.

Association president Stan Wheeldon said stressed-out truckers are sharing the road with aggressive motorists.
"The traffic is just horrendous and the aggressive driving is a disaster in the making," he told CBC News Monday. "The small four-wheeling traffic is in too a big a hurry to get where they're going."

But Prince George RCMP said those driving regular vehicles are not in the kind of danger described by the trucking association.
"It would be safer if the trucks were not on the road, but they're going to stay … it's a part of Prince George," said RCMP Sgt. Guy Tremblay, who heads the city's traffic division.
"Let's get used to them and let's be careful with them. That's all," he said.
There have been some minor collisions with trucks on city streets but there were no serious accidents, Tremblay said.
