| Ontario to fight proposed U.S. tax Ontario to fight proposed U.S. tax
3/21/08 Quote:
Already reeling from a high Canadian dollar, Ontario manufacturers are facing the threat of a new Michigan business tax aimed at firms that move goods into that state.
With Ontario-Michigan trade worth more than $65 billion a year, the tax has prompted howls of protest by Premier Dalton McGuinty, the Ontario Trucking Association and MPP Pat Hoy of Chatham-Kent-Essex, among others.
McGuinty has complained the tax "could impede trade and worsen current economic difficulties."
The tax, effective Jan. 1, would mean a levy of about $1,000 per truck entering Michigan on companies that do business there, but have no permanent premises there. "This would be an impediment to trade," Hoy said yesterday. And at a time when border crossings are being improved, the Liberal MPP finds it inconceivable such a measure would be imposed.
