Angry trucker causes traffic bottleneck

Angry trucker causes traffic bottleneck

Attempting to repair his truck on the shoulder of Highway 401 on June 5, Eric Coulson grew angry at the drivers who refused to slow down or even move over to allow him some room. His solution caused a traffic bottleneck some two kilometres long.
The Red Deer, Alberta, trucker was in Cobourg Criminal Court June 9 to plead guilty to a mischief charge.

He had experienced engine trouble in the eastbound lanes near Brighton at about midnight, Crown attorney Brad Kelneck, and waited until morning to allow the engine to cool down. But making repairs proved frustrating because of the traffic. His solution was to take an empty cardboard box, cover it with a blanket and put it in the middle of a traffic lane.
"It was described by police as having the appearance of covering a body or a carcass," Mr. Kelneck said. "Oncoming vehicles were forced to make quick lane changes to avoid hitting it."

Adding to the risk it posed was the fact that the breakdown had happened on a bend, where there was reduced visibility. Then there was the matter of the twokilometre- long traffic bottleneck that developed west of the box.
