Truckers concerned about speed limiters and civil rights
Truckers concerned about speed limiters and civil rights
In one month, July 1, many Canadians will be traveling the highways to or from Canada Day celebrations. July 1 is also a significant day for highway users in Ontario and Quebec, as law enforcement is scheduled to begin fining truckers who are found in violation of regulations that require heavy trucks to have speed limiters.
The six-month educational period that began Jan. 1 ends on Canada Day as full enforcement begins on the provincial laws that require trucks to be limited to 105 kilometers per hour, or 65 mph, in Ontario and Quebec regardless of where they are from.
Truckers are still hoping to get the governments of these provinces to take another look at what these laws will do to the flow of traffic, highway safety and to trucking.

the whole thing is a big crock of ### anyway, if you have a mechanic who knows what they are doing they can do anything with a computer setting so that it says it is goverened but it really isn't.
I love how they try to pass it off as being concered about saftey, if it really was about saftey, why are buses exempt? Isn't their cargo more important than ours? Buses are always doing well over 70 mph. Why not crack down on all the aggressive speeding car drivers on the 401? because it's not about saftey, it's about money, it never was about saftey.
And I love how they just dream up these numbers about how much "greenhouse gases" are going to be reduced. If they want to pay me big money I can make up numbers too.

Devil,
You're right any decent mechanic can screw with it. I get trucks now that are speeding and the first thing out of the driver's mouth is "I'm goverened at 65" B.S. When you are shot on LASER, there is no way you were doing anything but what the LASER says. I see where guys are changing their tire sizes which throw the speedometer off and guys plugging into the computer and dialing up different things. I don't understand why they limit trucks but not buses.

Of course it has nothing to do with safety. However, FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN SAFETY, is elected officials getting themselves re-elected. Bulls**t laws such as this are for the suburbanite housewife voter who view trucks in a less than favorable manor out of pure ignorance, contrary to the skill and knowlege it takes to write their rep, or join an anti trucker group.
You want to see 50 pissed off people - make the greyhounds run at 55 mph and only in the right lane. Lawmakers dont want to hear from 50 constituants who were held up in the right lane at 55. (worse yet stuck behind a truck LOL)
Enjoy the freedoms you have left. They are taking them away one by one here in what's left of the United States as well!

Out running on the #1 in Manitoba yesterday and was cruising at 105, not governed but set at the speed and had a Canadian Military rental pass me going about 110k. So if the Canadian Govt is not willing to run at the limited speed with their rentals what makes you think the rest of the country would. But then again those in charge at scales will not hassle those trucks when they do scale out or stop.

And just by-the-by, if trucks have to be governed at 65MPH, make not only the buses do the same, but EVERY SINGLE 4-wheeler on the road be governed at 65 MPH, as well!
Besides, split speed limits are about the most dangerous thing ever dreamed up by idiot govt.!!

‘Speed limiter’ fines begin July 1 in Ontario, Quebec
‘Speed limiter’ fines begin July 1 in Ontario, Quebec
Two Canadian provinces will begin handing out fines Wednesday, July 1, to truckers who do not have a speed limiter activated on their rigs.
Laws in Ontario and Quebec require that all trucks 1995 and newer grossing at least 26,000 pounds have a computerized speed limiter activated at or below the maximum of 105 kilometers per hour, or 65 mph. Yes, the law affects trucks from the rest of Canada and from the U.S. that travel in Ontario or Quebec.
The minimum fine according to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation is $250 for a truck found not to have a working speed limiter or if the “anti-tampering” provision has been violated. Maximum fines can reach $20,000.

I have an idea, wouldn't it be easier to pull over speeders and fine them? instead of pulling over random trucks doing the speed limit to see if they are able to speed???
