Pushed it a little too far

Had a problem with my car with a rather loud rattle when in gear. After removing the torque converter which is what I suspected was wrong I found this:

This is the pump shaft on the trans. Snapped that sucker right off.

Re: Pushed it a little too far

Correction: This part is the stator support not the pump shaft.

Re: Pushed it a little too far

You're running an AOD aren't you? Not the strongest transmission out there for a more than stock motor. The T-5 isn't much better. A built c series tranny might be your best bet, but no overdrive.

Re: Pushed it a little too far

i too had a '94 t-bird, but with the 3.8 v-6, non supercharged. it had the AOD trans too. it had 34,000 miles when the tranny exploded, just out of warranty. cost me $1,700.00 for a rebuilt tranny. then i got a "notice" from ford about the head gaskets going bad on those engines, but ford would cover up to 6 years. again, i was out of that "warranty" as well.

i traded the t-bird for a new chevy prism LSI (2000)................i didn't dare keep that car anymore, knowing how much a head gasket job would cost......

good luck with that tranny...........you're gonna need lots of it........

Would it be fair to you to ask you to try a Chevy next time? Just kidding. Hope it all works out for you.

Guys race with both and have no troubles. The AOD does need to me modified to support a serious race engine. Millions of Mustangs run the AOD and the T-5. The T-5 can be upgraded as well. The 92-93 Mustangs are said to have the strongest T-5s and they have a different first gear ratio as well.

The input shaft is known to be a weaker part and is usually upgraded.

I would check with your rebuilder and find out why this shaft failed. It takes allot of shock to break one. Usually the AOD loses 4th gear when it fails.

94? Isn't that the E4OD? I'll have to check.

I just saw the part about High Stall and SuperCharger. LOL
