Tiny Smart cars aiming to make it big in USA

Tiny Smart cars aiming to make it big in USA

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - They might measure a mere 2.5 meters (eight feet) in length and only be capable of carrying two passengers, but tiny Smart cars are aiming to make it big in the United States, where hulking gas-guzzlers have long been the kings of the road.

As more than one million car enthusiasts prepare to descend on this week's Los Angeles Auto Show, one of the central attractions is expected to be Daimler's "Fortwo" Smart car, which goes on sale in the US next year.
Retailing at 11,600 dollars, Smart cars are cheap, easy to maneuver, and fuel-efficient, running at around 40-45 miles (65-72 kilometers) to the gallon.
But will they catch on with American motorists? Smart USA spokesman Ken Kettenbeil is convinced they will.
"We definitely think that the Americans are ready for the Smart Fortwo," Kettenbeil told AFP.
The company has already received 30,000 reservations for the car, which its manufacturers hope will catch on with city-dwellers hoping to escape increasingly gridlocked roads.

These cars are really innovative. I saw them at the 2006 NY Auto Show. There were actually 3 models on display. The two door in pictured in the article. A four door and a four door convertible. As I remember they worked off a 3 cylinder engine and were very fuel efficient. They are all over Europe and South America. If you go to the website you can check them all out [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link.

Their relatively safe as long as a semi doesnt run them over.

with a little modification it's quite a delightfull little automobile.

I moved to the us from Germany in 2005 where i drove a smart from 2000 to 2004. I had all them big and/or fast German cars but If you live in a big city and do not have a profile neurosis, the smart is the best choice. That mini engine (3 cylinder, 0.8 liter, turbo diesel) has quiet some kick, and that whole lightweight/sporty setup leaves some cars "in the dust". safety..: my 2000 model had 6 airbags and a safety cell which lead to a crash rating above the European (!) average. ya, i know, head on with any v8 or a big rig won't do you any good in a smart. oh, and i got 56mpg in the city. v/max 85mph. I'm 6ft, 1in tall.

I wanted to buy one before I left germany to give to my wife. Mostly to have something that everyone would point at!They said the wheelbase was to short and they would not allow them in the US because they were not safe. I guess with gas as high as it is they are safe now.

Hey, me too, got long legs. Three of my friends have them, and they are really amazing to travel in! The doors are really big, and you feel like you are in a 'regular' vehicle!
I think if it werent for the price, I would probably get one too!
In South Africa they have the Forfour as well as the Fortwo. In Canada, they only have the Fortwo.
You should see if someone could take your for a ride... really cool!
