Ford to offer buyouts to 54,000 workers

Ford to offer buyouts to 54,000 workers
1/24/08
Quote:
DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it will offer buyout and early retirement packages to all 54,000 U.S. hourly workers in an effort to cut more jobs and replace workers with those making a lower wage.
Chief Executive Alan Mulally said the new round of buyouts was negotiated with the United Auto Workers union.
He said the first round would be offered immediately to workers who had been employed at already closed plants in Atlanta, St. Louis, Edison, N.J., and Norfolk, Va. Those offers close Feb. 28.
Employees are expected to leave the company by March 1, Mulally said during a conference call with reporters and industry analysts to discuss the company's 2007 earnings.
The second round of buyouts would go to workers at all other U.S. Ford locations, opening the week of Feb. 18 and closing March 17. Mulally said workers who take packages in this round would likely leave the company starting April 1, with all of them gone by year's end.

They're going to buy them out and REPLACE them???!!! I've never heard of such a thing!! That's shameful!!! That means if you work at Ford and start earning good money, your job is in jeopardy very soon.

That's disgusting!! Ford makes enough money to pay its workers a decent wage. They should be ashamed of themselves!! I'm glad I never owned a Ford. I sure wouldn't now.

Why pay some Union hump $40 an hour when you can pay some other Union hump $20?

That's bad man, wow. Oh yea, Ford workers are some of the most lazy people I have EVER seen. I used to go into Ford plants a lot and those same people making $50/hr go as sllloooowwww as they can and clean their noses out as much as possible...anything to avoid work. It is PATHETIC to sit there and watch them, I mean I would be ASHAMED to act like they act. Well, that screwing around trying to milk every second out leaves them without jobs now. It is ABSURD to pay over $40,000 for a Ford truck just so their workers can buy million dollar houses, etc. Ridiculous.

I know this sounds mean, don't mean to be...but, if you EVER have watched those guys work, you would be ashamed and that's putting it nicely.

The price of new Fords is nuts, to say the least. Several months ago I was at a chili cook off and our local Ford dealer had a F-250 with a few add ons and the 6.4 powerstroke on display there and the darn thing had a sticker price north of 50K, talk about sticker shock.....
