I have an '06 F350 Crew-cab non-dually. I normally drive 14 miles a day from my house to my yard and back, all on surface streets no freeway driving. The computer says I average 11.5 MPG. When I tug my fifth-wheel fully loaded at 17k I get about 6 MPG.

When I do drive Highway the computer says 20 MPG but that's the computer. When you buy a "Cadillac" you can't complain about the price of fuel.

That 6.0 has enough balls to climb mountain roads with the fifth-wheel (hwy 38 no problem. That first long grade past Mentone before the fork to Yucaipa, I'm doing about 50-55 and I never have to pull over or won't pull over because you don't need to pull that grade faster than 55.

Well I have a early 99 F-350 Cab-n-chassis crew cab with a Herrin Hauler steel bed with the 7.3. Has been a dang good truck. But it scales right at 9,000 pounds. I get 14 mpg driving around local. On the road 16-17. Pullin my toyhauler (38 footer) "Lil Red" gets 10 mpg. (Scale 24,000 pounds truck and trailer with toybox empty and me not in the truck) Have 145,000 miles on "Lil Red".

Have two "Shop trucks". One a 2000 F-350 Crew Cab dooley. Again a 7.3 in that one to. It has 460,000 miles on it. No engine work! A water pump, three alternators, one power steering pump and a few sets of brake pads. That one has been one HECK of a good truck. Mileage? Not sure. Not just one person who drives it. But several of us....

The other shop truck is a 2001 Extra cab F-250 long bed with another 7.3 diesel. That little sucker gets 20-23 mpg on the highway. Gets right at 20 mpg towin a 2,000 pound boat and trailer on the highway. The little blue truck has 170,000 miles on it.

But all three are 7.3 diesels. If I were gonna buy something right now????? I don't know WHAT I would buy.

I actually am thinking a MDT like a Sportchassis or "Lil Pete" (330) when I finally decide to replace "Lil Red". Or maybe take a class 8 with around 500K on it and single it out. Do one of those for towin the toyhauler Then get a little pip squeek econo beater for around town.

Like someone else has posted, Ford is SUPPOSED to be coming out with a 1/2 ton with a diesel. Rumor had Toyota doing the same.

Cummins has/is supplying dodge with a V6 and a V8 diesel for the half ton and smaller vehicles. The issuses with the 6.7 have been turbo/emmisions related. They have most of those issues worked out. The one thing going for dodge is the fact that it already meets 2010 emmision standards. All trucks are going to have issues. I have heard horror stories about the 6.7 and I have heard other people that have had no issues. We have a new dodge 3/4 ton with the 6.7 at our shop and we have had no issues with it at all. If you are wanting a heavy duty truck it is only going to get worse from here on out with emmisions. If you want a half ton wait till 2009 and you can get a half ton from every manufacture with their suppliers diesel in them.

I currently drive a 00 extra cab dodge ram sport 2500 Cummins turbo, I will tell you for a fact that this is the best truck i have ever bought. I encourage you to look at one. I get alot of crap from people up hear because its a dodge and its junk because they had a bad expriance with them. The power is right there when you need it. I get around between 18, and 19 a gal. My truck is a auto that is the one downfall i don't like, every now and then i bring a skid steer and mini excavator to my house for driveway and lawn repairs no problems pulling them. The thing with dodges is the trannys because the motor is to big for tranny, but i stll see people doing break stands and takeing them off road, no wonder why they are blowing up transmissions and acessiores.

Anyway best of luck.

I own a 03 F-250 7.3 and I love it. Its a 4 wheel drive lifted 6.5 inches with 37's on it. I bought it new and have added a programmer, intake and 4" exhaust from turbo back. The ONLY thing I have done to it, the crank sensor went out about 60k miles. It has almost 90k on it now and she is pulling strong!

i haven't been on here long enough to pm, and don't want to get in trouble listing links, BUT if you'd like to pm me with an email, i can send you a list of several multi brand and brand specific boards for diesel pickups. you can see what we all think of our diesels, how they are spec'd, and might help you decide if you want one or not. there are some wide ranges of fuel mileages, and ther are lots of things you can do if you want to play with one, both power and economy-wise.

You can send PM's to moderators, just not regular members yet. Let's see 'em.

I think you might be referring to the camshaft position sensor.

That sensor went out alot on the 7.3. Some never had a problem. Others would go through a couple each year. I replaced two on my 2002 in the 507000 miles.
