Diesel pickup trucks

I've been pondering making my next p/u truck a diesel, not that I need the extra torque for anything. I was thinking strictly of fuel economy.

A guy last week told me he gets about 23 mpg with his Dodge with Cummins engine and extended cab. I don't even get that with my small truck. I only get about 21. I don't even want the extended cab, since that adds probably another 1000 lbs that I don't need.

My question is would that be worth the $6,000 option that a diesel engine is when you order it.

My Dodge is a 2007 Quad Cab, 5.9 diesel dually. My experience with a lot of the drivers that claim these mileages are basing them on the overhead display. It lies quite well.

My truck at 69 mph and no wind will show 21.5 mpg. Actual hand calculation is usually 2 mpg less.

Well, it all depends on how long you would plan on keeping the truck. For instance, if you kept it and paid for it, then the 100,000 mile engine warranty would pay off, plus the added fuel mileage. Me personally, I have owned 2 different diesel trucks that I used for towing a race trailer, and I was very pleased with both. I would say yes, it would be worth it, for increase in fuel mileage and increased service intervals also.

My engine warranty expired after only 7 months.

Why only 7 months? Most all I have seen have at least 100,000 mile engine warranty.

I bought it with 26 miles on it. It now has 109,000 on it.

Well, I'd only be looking for a 3/4 ton regular cab, so yours is a lot heavier than what I would want.

As for calculating fuel economy, I've found that the only real reliable way to do that is to burn a full tank, fill it up again, and divide how many gallons you put in into the miles you drove since your last fillup.

I'd like to rent one of those for about a week and see how they do.

3/4 ton with the 6 speed. I believe it is possible. I carry 115 gallons of fuel in the back. Tire chains, tools, and hitches.

Also, mine is 4x4
