DETROIT -- The strike at American Axle has forced the shutdown of a GM plant in Hamtramck as picketers increase their presence in light of the company's recent call for replacement workers.

A few hundred frustrated workers gathered in front of American Axle's Detroit headquarters Monday, the same day GM announced the shutdown of its Hamtramck assembly plant, which will affect 1,849 hourly workers. It is the 29th plant to be fully or partially shut down because of the monthlong strike.
