Merge Toyota to Add Solar Panels to Prius Hybrids

Quote:
Toyota Motor Corp. plans to add solar panels to its popular Prius hybrid early next year to power the vehicle's air conditioning, a newspaper report said Monday.

As part of a complete design makeover, the Prius will be fitted with rooftop solar panels on its high-end models, the Nikkei economic daily reported.

"It's more of a symbolic gesture," said the unidentified source. "It's very difficult to power much more than that with solar energy."

WiseOne's Comments, well I have to give them credit, that sure is a different idea, LOL. I wouldn't care if my entire car was plastered with solar panels as long as I saved a lot of money!

How's that going to work in the winter, when the AC is used for defrosting, and the panels are covered in snow?

... as long as you stay within 6 miles of home, and can live with a 25-mph top speed.

Under those circumstances, a bicycle makes as much sense.

These stupid little things are supposed to have a range of 40 miles, longer with the solar panels, and be capable of 45mph...

Sounds like what they call a NEV, or Neighborhood Electric Vehicle. They current laws call for a 25 mph limit on their top speed, but most of them are hacked to go 35.

I bet with the solar panels they'll go 40.5 miles

no offense.. but your posts make it seem like you've not been paying attention to the current state of electric vehicles.

there are models that fit what you say but there are others that can do 100mph+ and drive more than 40 miles on a charge. not cheap though.

as for the snow in winter.. most people don't of course but i clean snow of my entire car before i go driving around. though.. this is probably partly because the car i have has a moon/sun roof and i like the extra light coming through it. it's a bit unnerving to look up at it and see only snow on the glass.

Edit- thought just crossed my mind... not far off topic.. anyone have any idea how hybrids/electric cars deal with heat in winters? normal cars/trucks use the engines hot coolant to heat the air.. an electric car cant really do that, and a hybrids motor shuts off all the time in the city from what i've read..
