3408e engine help

Hello,

I’m new to forums and the internet in general. So be kind as you experience my ignorance.

I recently purchased a 1995 Aeromax S/A with a 3408e engine. Driving it home, my follower told me that it would “white smoke” under acceleration sometimes, but not always. Once while it was running, I noticed a pressure leak coming from the coolant reservoir. It stopped once the engine stopped running. Several other times after reaching normal temp., it didn’t leak. The coolant level hasn’t dropped much in the short 3 hours or so of running. How do I check for coolant leaks without running the engine?

Also, I think it might have RPM issues. One time I started it to check repaired airline check valves and it peaked about 2900. Another time it peaked about 1500. It didn’t sound any different at the higher rpm than the lower. Is there a quick check for the rpm’s? How do I bypass the 5 minute idle shutdown mode?

One last thing. I’m not a speed demon but do like to travel the speed limit on the interstate. The maximum speed was just over 60. Some nearby states have 75 mph limits. How can I get the extra 10 or so mph’s?

thanks

Are you sure this is a 3408E? Because there is no such thing, maybe you mean 3406E? Or 3208?

Most likley you have a cracked head or a head gasket out, best way to determine this is a leak down or dyno test. Speed limiter needs to be changed by dealer that can change paramaters in the ecm.

I've never heard of a 3408E in a truck, or a 3408 mechanical in that new of a truck. Anything is possible, i guess. It is a V-8 right?

3408 is a V8, I've only seen one in a truck. Head gasket, cracked head, or injector cup could cause the white smoke.
Changing the speed, idle time can only be done with a computer, software, and translator, by a dealer, or company with the software.
Sometimes the idle limit is only set for idle, not for cruise. try setting the cruise and see if it still shuts down after five minutes. The ECM can be set to allow the driver to overide the shutdown, if the check engine light blinks before the engine shuts down, tap the clutch or throttle peddle, I had an engine that was set for three minute idle, when the check engine light blinked, I would tap the clutch, and then it would run all night. These are all things that can be turned on or off or reset with the computer and software.

thanks for the help. I guess my finger got excited and hit the wrong key. It's a 3406e. I'm sure it's an inline 6 cyl. and electronic.

I'll look for the check engine light next time. It blinked once before and I thought 'oh crap, what has happened now'.

what about the rpm fluctation?

thanks.
