Exclamation Car trouble? ask MasterTech!

Hello everyone!
Let's face it. we've all had trouble with that ol' 4 wheeler. you know, that thing we drive where we can't fit the truck. Well a good friend of ours here at The Truckers Report is a Master Mechanic and is here to answer your car questions as best he can. He works on cars full time and is VERY knowledgeable.
So if your having some car trouble and just don't know what it is, then post your problem here and MasterTech will try his best to figure it out and let you know.

I got a project I'm helping a friend with we could use a littlle info on.

Not really an advise based question so maybe this wont work, but lemme ask anyway

We are working with a 1993 Lincoln Towncar. We are putting in an after market stereo. The car had the facrory amp mounted in the truck and a 10 disc changer also from the factory. The problem is we want to take the amp out of the loop. I havet found the power supply for the amp itself but the power comes and goes leaving him with no sound at all. Since the speaker wires run thru the amp and the original head unti how do we loose the amp? Or would you have access to a schematic you might be willing to share?

I would be happy to share a wiring diagram with you, BUT the online service I use at the shop won't allow me to save it to my PC and upload it here, they use some good security.
I would suggest buying a Chilton's manual from the parts house and looking up the wiring for the radio, or if you want you can do a google search for alldata do it yourself. Should be able to get a wiring diagram from there.

I usually don't do much in the way of radio repair, I try to send most of those problems to a specialist that I know.

I have an easy one for you.

I had a '70 Chevy p/u with a 2 bbl. That leaking piece of crap had to go, so I replaced it with an Edelbrock 650. What I liked about those was no gaskets below the level of the fuel line, so no leakage.

Anyway, while I was adjusting it, I had a vacuum guage attached to it. By the time I got it done the vacuum was reading higher at idle, and went down with increases in engine speed. Wierd, I thought, but what the hell, it damn sure runs good now.

Seems to me that would work the opposite, and vacuum should be less at idle. Care to explain that for us, M/T?

Vacuum should be very close to the same at 2500 rpm as it is at an idle.
If you had an exhaust restriction the vacuum would be about 3 Hg less at 2500 than at an idle.

I may be reading your question wrong? Are you talking about the changes in vacuum when you snap the throttle open momentarily?

Got a couple of questions on for my Dodge Caliber;

1.) I was driving down the highway on a hour trip at 65mph and accerated to 70mph. I noticed my fuel gauge climb. Is this common?

2.) Whats the best speed for fuel economy on this car. When I did pizza delivery, I averaged 30mpg and now I get 25-27 in the city.

3.) How often should I change out the fuel filter?

I have not heard of that being a common problem, howerver, the car is new enough that I haven't seen any in our shop yet. I would check with your Dodge dealer and see if there is possibly some flash programming that deals with this issue.

Sorry Hunter I am not gonna be much help there as I have never driven one nor do I know anyone who has.

The fuel filter should be part of the fuel pump module that's in the tank, it won't need to be serviced until the fuel pump goes out and then the whole fuel pump module assembly gets replaced.

Hunter
Hope that helps.

Well, I did have stock cast iron exhaust manifolds on it, as if that would amount to any at all. Stupid headers kept rusting out.

I've driven lots of vehicles that do this.

If the fuel level sender is near the rear of the tank, the fuel will move toward the rear as you accelerate causing the float to rise.

Mastertech that helps me a lot but I have two other questions;

How do I get good gas mileage? I live in central Florida where 93-96 is common. I have no choice but to run my a/c.

Should I change to high mileage oil to increase the engines length or stick with regular till 75-100K. I ask as this will be my car for the next 5 years and need to make her last.
