Cars People Drive Faster in Quiet Cars

People Drive Faster in Quiet Cars

Quote:
Sept. 24, 2008 -- Cars designed to be quieter on the inside could be tricking us into thinking we're driving slower than we really are, according to researchers. Mark Horswill and Annaliese Plooy of the University of Queensland reported their findings in the journal Perception.
"The main design principle of making cars these days to be as quiet as you possibly can, is actually a real problem for road safety," said Horswill.
Engineers and car manufacturers reduce the level of noise inside cars because they think it distracts the driver or interferes with the car's entertainment system.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Looking around drivers have more and more distractions all the time. Who's bright idea is it to make car stereo's with built in DVD players ( the safty function can be by passed by hooking the wire that tells if the vehicle is in gear or not up to a ground), or DVD players in the back that play without headphones being used. Or how often do you hear someone else music while they are still a mile awayand makes your heart and head hurt when they pass you. I also love cell phones, which now are being limited in many areas.
And what about turn signals. Thats another option that lots of drivers wont use.
It seems to me that the options that drivers tend to use the most are the ones that are the most dangerous.
Think about it watching a movie while driving, or music so loud that you cant hear sirens , or distracted on the cell phone lets forget about hands free most drivers drive 1 handed anyway, and then theres texting. Kids Screaming, wives nagging and my all time favorite distracted driver I ever saw was a woman in Dallas who was applying make up while driving. Idiot vanity mirror on drivers side. She was good didn't see her lane was closed and drove into one of the barricade trucks. Got out of her car with lipstick going up the side of her face. Love to know how she explained that one.

My first car was an '82 Buick Century. It was a 15yr old car at the time I started driving it. My next car was (is) a 1995 Olds Silhouette. Both gave plenty of wind noise on the highway.

First time I got into a newer car, I was going 70 in a 55 before I realized it. Thought I was still going 45. So it makes sense to me.

I believe it, my 04 saab is very quiet and I find myself flying everywhere. My 92 saab is a little louder, and I tend to pay attention to the speed better.
