My dad bought my first car for 1600 dollars and I paid him back 100 dollars a week until I got it paid for.

I wouldn't really call it lucky . Sounds like her parents knew she was deserving and responsible . She worked hard for what she had .
But then you could say she was lucky she had parents that taught her to be that way so yeah , luck came into play .

Lucky is meant that she was able to put the insurance on her car on the parents policy. Most of my friends got to do this for about 35 to 50 month. My cost was over 1000.00 per year on a car that was 6 years old.

It was not meant in any other way.

Yes, and back then that was HUGE money. I think my premium for a year was about $350, added on to my parents policy. Of course now its more than that for 6 months. I checked thinking that I would put my boys on a separate policy. No way could they afford that. It was cheaper to put them on our policy, with two full coverage vehicles than to get their own policy. Sucks to have young drivers.

My sister's got put on my parents policies, but mine was put entirely on its own. I have never understood why except maybe my mother had something to do with it.

There are other things I later found that my mother did that resulted in the comment I made.

I worked for my dad sweeping the floor at his shop starting at age 14. By the time I was 16 I'd saved up $2,000. I found my first truck at a garage sale and payed cash for it. It was a 1970 Frod F250 Camper's Special with a 360 and no power steering. I too was lucky enough to be on my parents insurance until I got into a couple accidents. Then I was on my own and paying $125 a month for just liability.

Like RickG, I bought a 1956 Ford when I was seventeen. That was in 1959, and I needed a car to attend school in another town. One of my first expenses was rent on a garage in the college town where no parking was available at my dorm.

I earned the money to buy the Ford, but I don't remember the price. I know my next car a year later cost $600. The only "improvement" I did to the Ford was an open header device welded to the exhaust pipe. With the turn of a wrench, I had straight pipes. The "Thunderbird" engine was a dog. There was evidence under the dash, etc. that the car had been in a flood. I had to replace the rocker panels due to rust. That was the first and last car I ever bought from a used car dealer. I bought more used cars, but from a new car dealership.

Although I helped clean houses and baby-sat for spending money, my parents did not allow me to have a "real" job when I was in school. One by one, my friends got jobs and I wanted one, too... but my mother held her stance by saying that I had the rest of my life to work, and I needed to concentrate on school activities. She wanted me to just enjoy those last few years of "childhood" because once I entered the adult world, she explained I would never have that freedom again.

Also, I didn't learn to drive until the end of my senior year. Quite honestly, I was pretty content with my bicycle. It got me where I wanted to go and didn't cost me but a new tire or brakes here and there.

But as my last year in high school drew to a close (1972), my parents insisted I get a license. So Daddy went out and bought a 1965 Chevy Bel Air on which I was to learn. It remained "their" car, but I was the primary driver.

Once I graduated and got a job, I picked up the insurance payments on the car... and when the Bel Air finally conked out at 120,000-plus miles, my parents told me I could have whatever trade-in value it brought.

So... in a nutshell, my parents bought my first car. It just took me a lot of words to say it.
