My parents gave me their old 1993 GMC pickup when I was 17. They bought a new pickup and they didn't want me driving that. I had a job so I had to pay them for the insurance. I also paid everything associated with the truck. Gas, tags, and maintaining it was up to me. I wish I still had it!

I worked on our farm since I was big enough to sit on a tractor, so I "earned" my first car. I got the hand-me-down family station wagon. It was a 1986 Ford Country Squire with the wood grain side panels and luggage rack. Most people would consider that a horrible first car, but it sat 8 legally and a few more if you wanted. And, while all of my friends were driving cavaliers and tempos, I had that 302 small block under the hood to keep them in line. I've never been a Ford guy, but I sure missed that car after it's untimely demise, and I still smile whenever I think about those friday nights after the game, running around town with litterally everybody I knew in the car.

I bought My 68 Camaro for $1,100 from my grandparents neighbor who was the original owner... It had been siting in his yard for over 20 years and was in horrific condition(everything was rusted)... I bought it when I was 14 and it took two years, almost every part available from Yearone and other sources to restore... With the exceptions of the sand blasting, the floor replacement, engine rebuild and paint my dad made me do ALL the work myself, It was all trial and error(best way to learn), and the ol' girl held up nicely for almost 12 years...

Bought a 1936 black Dodge 4 door in 1954 from a friend for $32.50. I called it the Capone Cart. Had it for 2 years and sold it for $35.00. Made the money to buy it, insure it and licence it selling newspapers on street corners and setting pins at the bowling alley.

My first car was a 1969 Ford Country Sedan station wagon with the fold up seats in the rear,, you could fit 10 to 12 people in that car,, it was light blue and had the rear tailgate that opened from the side and also went down like a normal tailgate,, it cost me $200. 00 from a friend of the family,, had a big V8 under the hood,, had some good times hanging out with friends with that old car,, i paid for gas insurance plates and all from working my own job,, kinda wish i still had that car,,it had power steering air conditioning and power brakes.. i even bought my own tires for it,, got it when i was 17..

Bought a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlas Ciera from my old man for $300. It seemed like a deal at the time but soon I found out I got ripped off. I had that thing in the shop every two months like clock-work. My dad always said he felt bad about that, but not bad enough to ever pay a repair bill. At least I learned to never trust a used car salesman when I was 16.

You'd need 10 - 12 people to be able to afford gas prices today . My brother-in-law had a station wagon like that when they were rationing gas in the 70's . He couldn't get enough gas to get to work and back and traded it in for a new Maverick .
