First car I had

Back in '79 I got a '69 Mustang. Paint job was oxidized, interior wasn't pretty but it had serious gt up & go! Paid $600, half from me and half from my parents and everything after was my responsibilty. Now 30 yrs later I wish for that car again. Love our Silverado p/up but still want that vintage 'Stang!

I paid $500 for my first car - a 1970 Chevy Camaro - in 1979. I brought it off one of our unit mechanics who said the motor was shot.

An investment of $35 for a battery and a set of points got it running - and gave me 38K miles of reliability until I traded it in Nov 79 for a 79 Cutlass Supreme repo.

Ummm,,, Coat hanger and a screwdriver?
I keed,,, I keed!

Well this is a double edge question, because the first car I considered truly "mine" I bought. I "borrowed" cars from my family in my teens but I bought my first car.

I'm sure you want a tale, so here we go:

My dad's a bit of a jerk. Being a teen and wanting my first car, I had visions of a trip to a dealership to pick out the car of my dreams. After all, other parents did it! Right?

(I should mention here that frankly, we are all stupid when we are teens. heh heh)

Well for the most part he let me bum around in an old CJ-7 we used to plow the driveway. So that was my summer/Senior year ride.

But when I went away to college, hundreds of miles from home, he dropped the hammer. "NO you AREN'T taking the Jeep to school!"

Now romping around town is not a problem, nor the occasional road trip. But I'm GOING TO COLLEGE!!!

I NEEEEEEEEED a car Dad! (insert typical teenage groaning here)

Well I got so mad, that after my 1st semester, I took a grand I had saved in the bank, and made a deal on a sweet dark blue 1986 Mercury Cougar.

Loved that rolling-recall.

Had about a buck-forty on the clock when I bought it, a rapidly expanding rust wart in the door, the speedo had a short (great for getting out of tickets), you could take the key out of the ignition while it was running, and I had to open the passenger window by hand. (Apparently power window motors are mounted by building the door around the motor, because once you pull it out,,,,boing!)

To this day I don't know what happend, but my roomate borrowed it once and it came back with out a grill and one headlight gone.

Lasted about three years when the transmission melted.

Still like the lines of them though. Maybe someday I'll restore one. (Has Foose ever done one?)

Grandma passed away and grandpa was in the nursing home. He couldn't drive anymore due to two strokes that he had. My older brothers both got trucks and since this car came available around the time I got my drivers llicense I got it for $2000. One prestine 1989 Corwn Victoria with 42,000 mile on the clock in 2001. I had to rebuild the trans a year later because a 10 cent bushing failed. After that car I was hooked on "grandma" cars. I now own a 2001 Grand Marquis with leather and air ride suspension on the rear. Mom sold my car to one of her co-workers who was in need of it for $250 just 1 year ago. Still going strong at just over 130,000 miles on it.

If you put your mouse on an individual photo it will enlarge
Something must be wrong with that bottom picture; you don't have to look hard at all to see the motor!!

1971 Firebird.
Bought it when I was 15 from the original owner for 500 bucks. I had saved money from the time I was 13 (folding boxes at a pizza place and sweeping floors at a transmission shop). I saved enough to buy it, get it going well, and the body work.

A little rust in the quarters, light haze of it on the roof. It had not been run in several years at the time. I put allot of work in that thing in highschool. I was in the Auto Mechanics class, so I did all the mechanical work myself. Had the body fixed at a shop and painted in the auto body shop at school. I want my car back lol.

Bought a 1980 Chevy p/u 4x4 short box for 500 bucks with money I saved when I was younger. It was a junker and had the 3 on the tree with a inline 6 cylinder but was a good runner. I couldn't kill that motor if I tried. My next was a 67 Chevy short box 2wd with a 350 small block that took years to restore. Still wish I had that one.

Lord I miss that pick up. Dad sold it in 1968 for $750.00. Pretty good deal. Anybody here know how to start a 1949 Chevrolet pick up? Just a question as I notice most here are early 60's or later.
screwdriver across the start solenoid starts most things. was it one of the wacky gas pedal starters? My 47 dodge p/u had that stupid setup as well. Or last resort roll her and pop the clutch. Ever started a 24 ferd? haha thats real fun. Or my 46' plymouth with a start button (seems to be coming back into style, nothing new under the sun.
